Summary:

The Bioinformatics IV is a senior-level expert responsible for developing and implementing advanced computational methods and tools to analyze complex biological data. This role involves leading bioinformatics projects, managing large-scale data analysis, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

The Bioinformatics IV provides technical leadership, mentors junior scientists, and contributes to strategic decision-making regarding bioinformatics initiatives and innovations.

For remote (outside of 50 miles of CDC - Atlanta, GA) ONLY: Quarterly 1-2 day site visits to CDC Headquarters in Atlanta, GA for in-person OSII meetings and with other CDC partners, including retreats, team meetings, project presentations, project meetings and working meetings, where face-to-face interactions are critical for accomplishing the contract tasks.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinate sequence data sharing with requestors and collaborating laboratories.
  • Analyze data from scientific projects and programs using appropriate programs and bioinformatics tools.
  • Perform quality assessment of next generation sequence data using appropriate tools and pipelines.
  • Perform bioinformatics analyses for the identification, and subtyping of healthcare-associated and emerging pathogens.
  • Perform protocols and analyze combined datasets, comprising epidemiologic data, and data generated from conventional and real-time PCR, and next-generation sequencing of samples related to healthcare-associated infection and other emerging pathogen studies.
  • Combine epidemiologic data, and data generated from conventional and real-time PCR, and next-generation sequencing datasets.
  • Develop, validate, and implement methods and procedures to analyze laboratory data, including methods for characterization and phylogenetic analyses of next-generation sequencing data, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate.
  • Perform bioinformatics analysis of complex samples, including identifying antimicrobial resistance genes, virulence factors, and other functions using appropriate bioinformatics tools and databases.
  • Upload sequence data (raw reads and/or assemblies as appropriate) to public databases (e.g., NCBI) under timelines established by the SMEs/project leads or Team Leads.
  • Apply theoretical expertise and innovation to develop new and improved concepts, principles, and techniques that will advance the body of knowledge of information management and apply advanced computer science methods and techniques to solve complex computer processing requirements for data analysis, inventory management and clinical system interface.
  • Present work plans, findings, etc. clearly, accurately, and at an audience-appropriate level.
  • Provide data/results/figures, etc., clearly, accurately, and at an audience-appropriate level.
  • Present project/research results at appropriate meetings or conferences as needed by CEMB, either in-person or virtually. At the request of the government, the Contractor may be required to deliver presentations at professional conferences to present emergency planning and preparedness best practices at preparedness-related conferences.

Qualifications:

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of statistical methods and machine learning techniques used in bioinformatics.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead scientific projects and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in bioinformatics, with a proven track record of leadership in data analysis, tool development, and scientific research.
  • Expertise in high-throughput sequencing technologies and related data analysis.
  • Experience in the analysis of large-scale biological datasets, including multi-omics integration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of cloud-based computing environments and data management systems.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for genomic data in clinical applications.

The salary range for this position is $120,000.00 - $122,000.00 annually.
