SSN(X) Propulsor and Shafting Engineer

Overview:

D435 Main Propulsion Machinery is in search of an experienced SSN(X) class Propulsor and Shafting Engineer. Engineers in this group will be responsible for providing high quality and efficient engineering and design services to both the Navy Propulsor and Shafting Team.

Engineers will also be responsible for the project management and oversight of design and development of the propulsor and main propulsion shafting components including the main shaft, shaft seals and housings, and bearing systems.

The group will support concept design development and engineering studies for propulsor/shafting-specific programs sponsored by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division and the Office of Naval Research. The group frequently works with other members of the Navy Propulsor and Shafting Team including Electric Boat’s shock, hydrodynamics, and ship signatures departments, Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory, and Navy laboratories.

Occasional travel to Washington DC or vendor sites may be required.

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Marine/Ocean or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering
  • 4+ years of related (to degrees listed above) engineering experience
Preferred
  • Master of Engineering
  • Experience in finite element analysis methods
  • Experience developing analysis methods and mentoring/knowledge transfer
  • Experience with mechanical engineering principles including rotating machinery, fastener design, structural strength evaluations, and analytic and numerical analysis methods

Skills:

The individual must be a detail oriented and highly motivated team player and should have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and procedures as well as have good technical writing and communication skills.
