JOB SUMMARY

The Facilities Assistant is responsible for supporting maintenance efforts of the Museum's building, exhibits and equipment to ensure that the space is safe and functional. Reporting to, and with the support and guidance of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Assistant will play a supportive role in inspecting facilities, executing updates and renovations, and managing relationships with service providers.

The Facilities Assistant works closely with the Facilities, Programs, and Operations teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists routine maintenance, including safety procedures and checks, on facilities and exhibits; makes repairs as needed to ensure optimal functioning of the space.
  • Inspects museum space and assets, documents findings, generates work orders, and collaborates on emergent issues with the Facilities Manager for resolution.
  • Assembles furniture, equipment, custom-built materials, and maintains their functionality.
  • Supports day-to-day operations of facilities, coordinates with janitorial staff when needed.
  • Reviews inventory for essential cleaning and facilities materials and collaborates with the Facilities Manager to place orders.
  • Creates reports on maintenance, repairs, safety and other occurrences for supervisors and other relevant staff.
  • Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years’ experience minimum in facilities, maintenance, or equivalent handy work.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
  • Experience with repair tools and techniques.
  • Attention to detail and efficient problem-solving skills.
  • Intermediate mechanical skills and knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, and other building systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other standard office software, systems, and collaboration tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to be proactive, take initiative, problem-solve, and do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Great interpersonal skills and ability to represent the organization and work collaboratively with diverse staff and public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The person in this position must be able to:

  • Move about inside the office to museum exhibits, office machinery, storage shelves, etc.
  • Lift up to 49 lbs.
  • Communicate via telephone, video conference, email, and in-person.
  • Stand for sustained periods of time, use ladder, bend, and kneel.

SCHEDULE

The Facilities Assistant is a full-time, exempt position with a typical schedule of Museum business hours (usually between 8am and 5:30 pm), Wednesday-Sunday, with some evenings as needed; however, schedule may vary.
