Diagnostic Lab Technician I

Bartlett Tree Experts is a nationwide tree and shrub care company with a research and diagnostic lab located in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the Diagnostic lab, woody ornamental pest, disease, and abiotic problem identification is the name of the game!
This is an entry-level position that is focused on running all routine testing procedures and maintaining essential laboratory functions. This position is responsible for completing all listed responsibilities and regularly communicating with diagnostic lab staff.The ideal candidate is comfortable working under high seasonal pressure, performing repetitive tasks, and is eager to learn about plant diseases that impact trees and ornamental landscapes. Responsibilities:
TITLE: Full-time Diagnostic Lab Technician IREPORTS TO: Diagnostic Services Manager
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Opens, sorts, and troubleshoots daily mail delivery of samples
- Prepares and processes roots for various disease screenings
- Performs DNA extraction using manual and automated extraction methods
- Prepares and processes samples for conventional PCR, Real-Time PCR, and ELISA testing
- Sends samples to external lab for Sanger sequencing; processes results
- Reports test results to submitters
- Prepares culture media
- Assists diagnosticians with culturing and plating
- General laboratory: washes dishes, performs regular equipment maintenance, and manages autoclave trash
- Evaluates supply inventory and communicates order needs to Technician II
- Works closely with seasonal lab personnel and other technicians
- Regularly communicates with supervisor and diagnostic lab staff
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications- 2-to-4-year degree with a background in arboriculture, horticulture, plant science, botany, microbiology, or a related field
- Comfortable under seasonal pressure of peak sample time
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and comfortable performing repetitive tasks
- Experienced with basic computer skills and various software programs including Microsoft Office Suite and Laboratory Information Management Systems
- Experience working in an NPDN lab or other lab setting
- Experience working in retail, food service, or healthcare setting
- Strong interest in plant pathology, entomology, arboriculture, and ornamental plants
- Works well in a group setting and is eager to learn
