Overview:

A lava & Son is seeking a Industrial Engineer for our facility in Chicago, IL! The Industrial Engineer is responsible for supervising, formulating, administering, and coordinating industrial engineering policies designed to improve operating performance, reduce waste and delays, and otherwise promote company-wide cost reductions and process improvements to maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality in A.
Lava’s operations.This role involves analyzing work-flows, implementing lean manufacturing practices, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to design and implement process improvements. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills, a background in manufacturing, and a focus on continuous improvement.

Activities involve using time study or standard data for various operations, production methods, equipment layout, material handling, workforce, equipment, and material utilization to improve operating performance. Support Cost Estimators/ Analysts by supplying data from existing projects or validating assumptions for new projects to help generate cost assumptions for the manufacturing process, space and layout requirements, material handling and facilities capital/tooling investments, and direct/indirect labor.

When applicable, responsible for initial (Pre-SOP) facility plan, including Plant Floor Layout, Material Flow Analysis, and Inventory Optimization. Supports Packaging Engineer with input to the design process focused on optimization to support improved labor efficiencies, ergonomics, plant layout, and freight optimization.

Responsibilities:

  • Process Improvement: Analyze and evaluate existing manufacturing processes to identify areas for improvement. Recommend and implement changes to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize the use of resources, including materials, labor, equipment, and automation. Benchmark processes and equipment throughout the industry and incorporate them into Piston Group/ A.Lava standards.
  • Lean Manufacturing: Lead and drive the implementation of lean manufacturing principles throughout the organization (5S, Kanban, Visual Factory, Kaizen, TPM, Six Sigma, etc.) to drive process improvements and ensure the highest levels of efficiency and quality.
  • Workflow Design: Design and improve work-flows, layouts, and production processes to ensure smooth, cost-effective operations. Collaborate with production teams to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
  • Capacity Planning: Assess the current production capacity and recommend adjustments or enhancements to meet production goals. Develop strategies to optimize equipment utilization and labor efficiency.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze production data, including cycle times, production rates, and downtime, to identify trends and make informed recommendations for improvements.
  • Cost Reduction: Evaluate material usage, labor costs, machine setup times, and other production-related expenses to identify cost-saving opportunities. Implement cost-reduction initiatives without compromising quality.
  • Safety and Ergonomics: Ensure all process improvements consider employee safety and ergonomics. Collaborate with the safety team to identify and mitigate any risks in the production environment.
  • Sustainability: Promote and implement sustainable manufacturing practices that reduce environmental impact, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and materials optimization.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with production, maintenance, quality assurance, and supply chain teams to ensure that process changes are effectively integrated and aligned with overall business objectives.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage process improvement projects from start to finish, including time-line development, resource allocation, and performance tracking. Responsible for the planning, coordinating, and implementing assigned projects. Develop and track capital investment budgets for assigned projects. Develop all RFQs and Equipment Specifications as needed.
  • Training and Development: Provide training and support to production teams on new processes and improvements. Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Problem-solving: Responsible for problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and resolving issues as directed or required. Supports the Team in applying root cause analysis and problem-solving tools during crisis management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. Professional certifications (e.g., Lean Six Sigma, PMP) are a plus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an industrial engineer, preferably in a manufacturing environment. Experience in logistics, supply chain, and the bedding, textile, or consumer goods industries is a plus.
  • Proficiency in industrial engineering software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools for process mapping and layout design. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and financial modeling, Projects, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, lean principles, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to analyze data, identify trends, and implement effective solutions.
  • Experience leading process improvement projects, with the ability to manage time-lines, budgets, and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with different departments and present findings and recommendations to management.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a focus on quality, efficiency, and safety.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
