Robert Half is seeking a highly skilled and experienced IBMi Systems Engineer to join our client's team. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining IBMi (formerly AS/400) systems and applications. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless operation of IBMi infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical support.

This position requires a strong understanding of IBMi architecture, security, hardware, and Fortra toolsets, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This is a contract to hire opportunity and sits onsite at the office outside of Chicago.

Responsibilities:

  • Deploy and implement best practices on the IBMi/Power systems platform.
  • Maintain optimal performance of IBMi/Power environments, related equipment, and core applications.
  • Perform IBMi/Power hardware and software upgrades, including operating system updates.
  • Monitor and optimize IBMi/Power system performance.
  • Manage PowerVM and virtualization of Power Systems.
  • Apply PTFs, CUMs, system saves, and IPL management.
  • Maintain system high availability and disaster recovery readiness using PowerHA.
  • Configure physical and virtual partitions and systems using the Hardware Management Console (HMC).
  • Ensure successful project completion and implementation.
  • Assist in regulatory audit remediation (PCI, SOX, etc.).
  • Monitor and enforce system security guidelines for all applications.
  • Develop internal documentation and procedures related to specific customer environments.
  • Manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes.
  • Administer FORTRA tools for IBMi.
  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive monitoring and alerting strategy encompassing IBMi, storage, and all associated systems.
  • Participate in after-hours (24×7) support on-call rotation.

To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience with OS/400 in an IASP environment.
  • Familiarity with PowerHA as HA/DR methodology for IASP environments and Fortra’s RobotHA for HA/DR methodology for SYSBASE data.
  • Experience working with IBM storage systems (DS8K and V7K) and understanding disk-based replication technologies.
  • Subject matter expertise in performance, security, hardware, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with IBMi performance tools such as iDoctor and MPG.
  • Advanced knowledge of Fortra products supporting IBMi.
  • Experience with business applications such as BizManager, EDI, and GoAnywhere MFT.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, SSH, HTTP, and FTP.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or
  • 3-5 years of experience in Systems Engineering, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
