Accessibility Specialist (185-Day), Part-time

Overview:

The Accessibility Specialist will provide accessibility support services to the campus community.

Schedule: 25 hours per week.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Education, Computer Science, Information Systems, Instructional Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required
  • Accessibility Certifications through organizations such as IAAP (International Association on Accessibility Professionals). Preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) year experience working with students with disabilities. Required
  • One (1) year experience using assistive technologies, preferably in an educational environment, for accessibility evaluations. Required
  • One (1) year experience providing solutions to technology access issues for a broad array of disability populations, preferably in higher education environment. Required
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge and application of accessibility concepts and universal design principles, per W3C, Section 508 requirements and other relevant accessibility standards. Required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of disability laws (Section 504, ADA, ADAAA) as it applies to higher education. Required
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. Required
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments. Required
  • Ability to work independently. Required
  • Functional ability with microcomputer functions with mainframe application and requisite software packages including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite. Required
  • Ability to resolve routine problems with accuracy and composure. Required
  • Developed organizational skills and ability to be detailed oriented. Required
  • Knowledge of Penn College enrollment procedures. Preferred
  • Knowledge of functional limitations of various disabilities and the reasonable and appropriate technological accommodations that will help mitigate the limiting effects of disabilities in the academic arena. Preferred
  • Knowledge of production of Braille documents. Preferred
  • Awareness and understanding of copyright issues vs. students’ need to access otherwise inaccessible media. Preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing, providing, and collaborating on training materials and professional development for faculty and staff regarding accessibility and Universal Design.
  • Assist with developing tools and processes for evaluating technology assets, platforms, and services for compliance with accessibility standards.
  • Support campus administration in ensuring compliance with federal and state accessibility regulations.
  • Serve as an auditing and consulting resource to faculty and staff, third party vendors, and students on all matters related to accessibility and Universal Design.
  • Responds to reported accessibility issues and works with user and/or developer to determine compliance solutions.
  • Assist with ongoing promotion of a positive and supportive college-wide accessible climate.
  • Provide knowledge to the college community on acquisition, development, and implementation of accessible information technology and assist in developing Equally Effective Alternative Access Plans (EEAAPs) that address access issues.
  • Participates in professional networks and organizations and research in the area of accessibility; participates in related committees and advisory groups.
  • Provide insight on course evaluations to ensure processes, procedures, and plans for compliance align with the College’s Accessibility Policy.
  • Maintain program records, correspondence and other data including scanning documents.
  • Stay abreast of current ADA law, section 504, section 508, W3C, and developments in field of Disability and Access Resources and accessibility.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up to date notes/records related to students.
  • Assist in obtaining, processing and providing books in alternate format to students.
  • Assist in transporting adaptive equipment to classrooms/labs.
  • Assist with training students and faculty/staff on Assistive Technology, and the Accommodate System.
  • Attend staff meetings and department meetings.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Read documentation, identify, and provide appropriate accommodations, including assistive technologies to enrolled and prospective students with disabilities.
  • Provide on-going support services (i.e. academic, disability related; referrals) for students with disabilities throughout the academic year.
  • Provide assistance with processing equipment loans.

Pay Transparency: Based on minimum education and experience qualifications the hourly range is $21.00 to $26.00.
