Director of Individual Philanthropy

We are in search of a Director of Individual Philanthropy to join our non-profit team located in San Diego, California. The individual in this role will work closely with senior leadership, board members, and volunteers to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors, with a focus on major and planned gifts.

This role is integral to our mission to grow and maintain our donor base, leading strategic initiatives to increase financial support for the organization.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Individual Philanthropy Team, ensuring efficient and effective fundraising operations
  • Develop and implement strategies for individual giving, cultivating relationships with prospective donors
  • Plan and manage major gift solicitation efforts, targeting substantial contributions
  • Maintain and promote the organization’s Planned Giving program, encouraging bequests and legacy gifts in collaboration with the Chief Philanthropy Officer
  • Organize donor prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship events to expand individual donor contributions
  • Coordinate efforts between the marketing team and individual philanthropy, ensuring aligned messaging in fundraising communications and direct mail campaigns
  • Support board members and senior staff in soliciting gifts from major donors and planned giving prospects
  • Plan and manage Individual Philanthropy Team operations, including budget management and tracking of individual giving pipelines
  • Provide input and oversight on marketing strategies for individual philanthropy, ensuring cohesive communication between departments
  • Participate in cross-departmental meetings to enhance team integration and development • Proven experience in major gift fundraising and major donor relations
  • Demonstrable understanding and application of philanthropy principles
  • Experience in planning and executing fundraising campaigns
  • Proficiency in using fundraising databases
  • Strong track record in fundraising management and developing effective fundraising strategies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in team management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • A passion for the non-profit sector and commitment to organizational mission
  • Ability to travel as needed to meet with donors and attend events
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience and education.
