Position Summary

The Orthopedic Physical Therapy Resident will participate in a twelve (12) month curriculum, beginning August 2025, as a variable full-time team member. The resident will handle a standard orthopedic patient caseload, including non-operative and post-operative diagnoses.

As part of the residency curriculum, the resident will participate in regular one-on-one mentoring, with their assigned mentor, during patient care hours; additionally, the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Resident will also participate in formal, didactic lectures held regularly throughout the year emphasizing the APTA Orthopedic Current Concepts.

Overall, this position encompasses an adaptable schedule for the evaluation, assessment, and treatment of an orthopedic patient population. In addition to in-clinic patient care hours, the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Resident will actively participate in out-of-clinic opportunities regarding academic and research-based activities in collaboration with the faculty and staff of the University of Central Florida’s Physical Therapy Department.

Other experiences will emphasize collaboration among the various community partners regarding various volunteer and outreach events to promote outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions
  • Committed to the completion of the educational goals and objectives of the residency program and to the mission and values of
Orlando Health.
  • Performs duties outside of clinical time which may include, but are not limited to, sports field coverage, mobility screenings,
community support groups, physician rounding, teaching assistance or guest lectures with local physical therapy programs, multidisciplinary clinic days, volunteer community engagement events, and supporting local community partner events.
  • Reports to scheduled mentoring time prepared with patient cases to review or live patient mentor sessions scheduled. Resident
physical therapist is responsible for initiating need for increased time or support needed.
  • Communicates with residency program faculty, mentor, and clinical site supervisor as appropriate.
  • Collaborates within and across Orlando Health departments and its partners.
  • Complete one or more outcome-oriented projects.
  • Evaluates patients, gathering data from the patient, the physician, interdisciplinary team meetings if available, family, significant
other persons, and data sources.
  • Develops treatment plans which integrate with the continuum of care and have specific goals and objectives and treats
accordingly.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use, care, and maintenance of profession specific equipment, observing safety precautions
and providing verbal explanations of the equipment and its purpose.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to treat and provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the
assigned caseload.
  • Re-evaluates and modifies treatment plan and goals when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s
requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
  • Provides care as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her
practicing location(s). Recognizes and communicates when the patient has received optimal benefit from physical therapy.
  • Adheres to State Practice Act and Standards of Practice.
  • Ensures complete, and timely, documentation and accurate billing.
  • Provides patient/family education as indicated.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state,
and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree or higher from an approved program in physical therapy.

Licensure/Certification
  • Maintains current Physical Therapist license in the State of Florida. Temporary permit acceptable.
  • Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
