Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP) proudly stands as the largest expanded learning provider in San Mateo County, dedicated to empowering 5,400 TK-College students across 29 sites from East Palo Alto to Daly City. POSITION OVERVIEW

BGCP’s Redwood City Clubhouse, in partnership with the Sequoia Union High School District, runs summer programs for grades 9-12 designed to provide students with dynamic academic and enrichment activities to support and complement the school year curriculum and improve school outcomes and interest in learning.
Drawing on best practices in youth development, staff members guide students to build academic and life skills in a meaningful, fun context. We are looking for a positive and energetic individual to provide targeted Math instruction and intervention for high school students this summer.

The Summer Math Teacher will be working with a cohort of students specifically with a focus on Algebra. This position is for those who are available to work part-time and satisfy one of the following: have a valid teaching credential, are currently enrolled in a credential program, or passed the CBEST and CSET-Mathematics exams.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Engage with students to support them in their mastery of math skills, particularly in Algebra
  • Communicate academic progress and areas for improvement to parents and academic director
  • Have a solid understanding of the Common Core Standards (Seeing Structure in Expressions, Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions, Creating Equations, Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities)
  • Manage a classroom of approximately 1-20 students
  • Stay up to date with the multiple Math courses offered in our Sequoia Unified School District
  • Train Math tutors to effectively support students
  • Ensure quality programs, prepare youth for success, and promote the safety of members
  • Efficiently utilizing social-emotional skills to identify and address behavioral issues and notify club directors of any escalating issues
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to multitask and work well in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Exceptional time management, leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to create an academic environment that creatively engages
  • Adaptable to various learning styles
  • Ability to teach using a growth mindset framing for lesson plans
  • Experience in teaching students in a wide range of mathematics courses
  • Comfort with collaborating with teachers, parents, and students toward achieving academic success
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with high school teens in academic environments
  • Clear communication skills when dealing with teens, staff, and parents
  • have a valid teaching credential, are currently enrolled in a credential program, or passed the CBEST and CSET-Mathematics exams
  • Experience with MDTP and DOMA assessments
  • Familiar with courses and curriculum at Sequoia Union High School District
  • Proficient/fluent Spanish preferred
  • Experience teaching mathematics to high school students, familiar with 9-12 grade content

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, crouching, squating, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 20% walking & standing. Work environment noise level is usually moderate but can be noisy at times. All requirements are subject to reasonable accommodations.

LOCATION

Redwood City Clubhouse @ Redwood City, CA

WORK SCHEDULE

Hours: 2:30 - 7:00pm

Days: 4 days a week (Monday to Thursday)

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Employment Status: Part Time-Non Exempt
  • Pay Range: $50/hour depending on experience (DOE)

As part of the hiring process, BGCP requires candidates to complete a LiveScan fingerprinting, background check, and tuberculosis (TB) test.
