The Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Global Demand and Operations team is looking for a technically-skilled Software Development Manager to join our fast paced team. In this role, you will lead a team of talented engineers working on highly visible projects.

You will be responsible for scoping and delivering large projects end to end. Responsibilities include managing the day-to-day execution of software deliverables, guiding and mentoring software developers, driving project schedules from design to release, and managing the production launch.

You will lead and coordinate technical design/implementation efforts across multiple teams to develop optimal solutions.

The right candidate will possess a strong technical leadership background and will have demonstrated experience leading medium to large projects. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment with a high degree of ambiguity, relish the idea of solving problems, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities.

This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. Along the way, you will learn a lot, have fun and make a positive impact on what is often one of the first impressions of AWS by customers.

As a Software Development Manager, you find clear paths through roadblocks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints.

Key job responsibilities
  • Lead and grow an engineering team that will build, experiment, operate and maintain software in order to meet business and customer needs
  • Hire, coach, and mentor individuals
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team within an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Delivery of quality applications on-time
  • Own all operational metrics and support
  • Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to leadership
  • Evolution of the software engineering practices within the organization, including better reporting, tools, and evolution of development methodology
  • Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
  • Continue to build an effective development organization by driving the recruiting and hiring of senior level engineers, developing and managing the group, and conducting performance reviews of team members
  • Create and execute appropriate quality plans, project plans, test strategies and processes for development activities in concert with business and project management efforts
  • Reinforcing an engineering team culture that the engineering team has ownership of quality- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • Prior experience working with AWS technologies/services

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
