Job Summary:Under the general direction of the Director of PET and with the clinical supervision of the reading physician, the technologist performs PET imaging on patients of all ages to assist in diagnosing medical conditions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Complies with laws, regulations, and policies governing the practice of nuclear medicine.
- Ensures adherence to hospital policies, Division of Nuclear Medicine regulations, Radiation Safety, and NYS DOH Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection guidelines.
- Follows safety policies, including radiation safety procedures.
- Performs ordered examinations of appropriate anatomical regions per Division Standards of Practice and Protocols.
- Reviews procedure requests, protocol sheets, and patient medical information to ensure accurate completion of Radiology Department Final Checks.
- Ensures all pre-procedural preparations (e.g., fasting, hydration, glucose levels, voiding, medication suspension) are completed.
- Maintains and displays current Permits to Practice.
- Reviews procedure requisitions and patient screening forms, explaining procedures to patients and families, with interpreter assistance if necessary.
- Exercises sound judgment in assessing and responding to patients’ needs before, during, and after imaging procedures.
- Administers contrast agents and/or radiopharmaceuticals under Radiologist guidance and regulatory compliance.
- Performs quality checks on equipment, troubleshoots issues, and coordinates service calls.
- Documents radiopharmaceutical doses and provides patients with Dose Exposure Cards.
- Ensures a clean and organized work environment.
- Transfers and archives studies to PACS, MIM systems, and SMS clinical servers.
- Provides images to the reading room in accordance with Division Standards of Practice and Protocols.
- Assists with inventory and ordering necessary supplies.
- Adheres to quality assurance guidelines, HIPAA regulations, and patient confidentiality standards.
- Reports to the assigned PET area promptly at shift start.
- Performs required QA tasks, including documentation, area wipes, and survey measurements per regulatory requirements.
- Ensures proper handling of radio pharmacy delivery cases.
- Stocks necessary supplies for daily operations.
- Follows protocol guidelines, including appropriate wait times post-administration of PET radiopharmaceuticals.
- Performs additional duties as required.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Ability to start peripheral IV access lines.
- Experience performing injection procedures, including manual unit doses and Medrad Intego dose delivery systems.
- Proficiency in operating personal computers, imaging workstations, medical charting systems, PACS, and RIS.
- Flexibility in work schedules, including potential for extended shifts.
- Ability to interact professionally with attending physicians, residents, and fellows.
- Capable of producing high-quality imaging with minimal supervision.
- Ability to function effectively in a team-oriented environment, including training personnel.
- Reliable, adaptable, and able to exercise sound judgment.
- Competency in all relevant PET/CT imaging areas.
- Knowledge of SNMMI Quality Standards, including CPR, infection control, and anesthesia-associated imaging.
- Experience processing PET/CT imaging, including axial fusion, myeloma kidney standard cut, and coronal cut.
- Ability to perform quality assurance on PET cameras and related equipment.
- Experience with QC on dose calibrators (Intego, AtomLab 500) and wipe counters.
Education:
- Required: Completion of an approved School of Nuclear Medicine Technology Program.
Certifications & Licensure:
- Registered with the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMT) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine (N).
- Active New York State Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist License (Diagnostic with Injection Registered).
- Active CT certification for diagnostic CT and PET-CT fusion imaging (ARRT - CT).
- Maintains active Nuclear Medicine, CT licenses, and BLS certification.
- Engages in continued education to maintain technical competency.
Work Schedule & Details:
- Hours Per Week: 37.5
- Hours Per Day: 7.5
- Days Per Week: 5
- Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4 PM
