Tampa Electric is a subsidiary of Emera Inc., a family of energy companies which also includes TECO Peoples Gas and New Mexico Gas Company. Emera provides energy to residential and commercial customers in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, with career opportunities available in all of these locations.

The Manager is responsible in a line capacity to the Director – Bayside Power Station for the safe, cost effective, and environmentally compliant operation of all Station equipment.

Bayside Station is a nominal 2200MW power plant consisting of seven CT/HRSG trains operating in combined-cycle configuration with two steam turbines. The station also includes four simple-cycle aero-derivative peaking units. The combined-cycle units serve intermediate to base load requirements while the aero-derivatives provide peaking capacity as well as quick start, operating reserve and black-start services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review and evaluate plant operating metrics and take action to ensure optimum plant performance. Manage activities and functions associated with Station operations. Ensure operating procedures are documented, effectively communicated, and adhered to. Ensure Station operation is consistent with equipment capabilities, operating budget, Contractual Service Agreements, and environmental permits.
  • Maintain an overall effective safety & environmental program for operations personnel. Ensure that supervisors are placing sufficient emphasis on safety & environment, resulting in zero injuries and zero environmental incidents. Ensure crew safety meetings are taking place, review safety near misses, and show an emphasis on job safety by personally auditing job sites. Ensure HEC LO/TO procedures are periodically reviewed, maintained, and properly implemented as equipment changes and additions or deletions occur.
  • Manage expenditures within approved O&M and Capital targets.
  • Ensure the Station operates within all FERC, NERC and FRCC regulatory guidelines and policies.
  • Develop assigned staff through coaching, PR program, training, special assignments, and cross training. Provide direction to operating personnel to look for ways to continue to improve team performance, quality workmanship, work redesign, teamwork, and productivity consistent with Station goals. Work with the human resources department to ensure staffing levels are maintained for safe and reliable operation of the facility.
  • Coach and train all assigned operations supervisors in matters of personnel administration to include effective PR reviews, setting work priorities, and any other tasks that are part of their responsibilities. Ensure that all assigned personnel are adequately trained in Emergency Response Procedures (emergency event to include but not be limited to fires, toxic gas releases, liquid releases, bomb threats, explosions, workplace violence, alcohol / drug testing, etc...).
  • Provide input on Station goals. Work with Bayside’s Key Management Team in developing and prioritizing plans to support goals. Make recommendations to the Director in areas of manpower, budgeting, major equipment modification, and changes in operational procedures.
  • Coordinate daily and seasonal operating needs with Grid Ops, Ops Planning and Power & Fuels Marketing.
  • Ensure adequate engineering and technical talent is brought to bear on operating problems and that corrective projects are initiated. Develop, foster, and support a strong team environment among engineering/technical staff and operations. Provide on-call administrative support and ensure adequate support during absences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Experience
Required: At least 6 years power plant or related industrial operations.

In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years work experience may be considered.

Supervisory Experience

Required: 3 years of supervisory experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required: Working knowledge of combined cycle generation. Understanding of the conceptof “Operational Best Practices”. Knowledge of Safe Work Practices including HEC Procedure requirements

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work at the Power Plant Monday to Friday (6:30am to 3:30pm), including scheduled and unscheduled overtime as well as holidays as required. Exposure to plant conditions is required. Utilizing proper PPE will be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to navigate through plant structure; including ascending / descending stairs (multiple levels)
