Overview:
Princeton University Library is seeking a Library Collections Specialist V to provide high-level support for scanning maps and publishing geospatial data on Figgy. This position will manage the whole operation of scanning maps, georeferencing the scanned maps, extracting data from the georeferenced maps, and creating metadata for digital maps and geospatial data.The person in this position needs to review geospatial data before the data is published on Figgy. This position will work closely with paper map cataloger, including providing multi-sheet scanned map names to the map cataloger, moving the maps from one map drawer to another for scanning and again after a map has been scanned, and entering the MMS ID of a scanned map that was cataloged in ALMA and published on Figgy.
Other duties may include surveying collections and carrying out special projects. The person in this position needs to work closely with other staff members in the Maps and Geospatial Information Center.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a paper map scanning, creating metadata for geospatial data and publish the scanned maps and geospatial data on Figgy.
- Work with GIS and Map Librarian to review geospatial data before they are published on Figgy
- Work closely with paper map cataloger to link map catalog records on Figgy and provide ARK number and other information related to the scanned map to map cataloger to enhance online map cataloging records
- Prepare a single or multi-sheet map set for either manual or automatic Georeferencing of maps and publish them on Figgy.
- Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising student assistants to support map scanning, metadata creation, and georeferencing of maps.
- Work closely with GIS and Map Librarian and paper map cataloger to support the mission of Maps and Geospatial Information Center.
- Help others who need assistance in creating geospatial metadata for publishing on our or other data portals.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree
- Knowledge and use of maps and geospatial data
- Knowledge of FGDC/ISO metadata standards
- Very good organization skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
- Candidates must be able to work in conditions where dust and mold are sometimes encountered, and be able to lift and handle containers that may weigh as much as 30 pounds
- Experience with photography, scanning, digitization, image processing
- Experience in bibliographic description and/or using an integrated library system for technical processing
- Experience with map copy cataloging
