Overview:

The Associate Director of Nursing is responsible for the daily operation of the Nursing Department and the implementation of standards to ensure the delivery of quality care. Acts on behalf of the Director in the event of his/her absence.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for resident care.
  • Interprets departmental and institutional policies and procedures to staff, residents, families and the community.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing to access staffing needs, and formulate staff schedules.
  • Collects, analyzes and presents statistical data as required.
  • Assists in budget planning and preparation, monitors cost of supplies and utilization of staff.
  • Coordinates activities related to resident care services between nursing and other disciplines.
  • Conducts investigations, and presents findings to the Director of Nursing and VP for LTC.
  • Assumes leadership role in QAPI initiatives in the facility.
  • Reviews the 24-hour nursing report to determine the effectiveness of nursing interventions and to identify resident care issues. Assumes 24 hours a-day accountability for nursing department.
  • Makes rounds regularly to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures and to assess the quality of resident care.
  • Conducts periodic rounds with Director of Nursing and / or members of Administrative staff to appraise selected units or overall function of department.
  • Works closely with Staff Development Department to assess staff learning needs and plan programs to meet those needs.
  • Acts as a clinical resource in interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Evaluates, annually and as needed, performance of Nurse Managers and Administrative Nursing Care Coordinators.
  • Assists in the recruitment and retention of nursing personnel.
  • Meets weekly with Nurse Managers and Administrative Nursing Care Coordinators to address concerns re: resident care/services, staffing issues and labor management issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and VP for LTC.
  • Attends conferences and meetings to maintain increase current knowledge of long-term and subacute care issues.
  • Assists the Director of Nursing in preparation for NYSDOH survey. Participates in the writing and development of Plans of Corrections.
  • In an emergency, performs other duties necessary for the welfare of the residents or the efficient operation of the facility.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Master’s in related health care field preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of progressive experience in Nursing Administration preferably in a long term care setting.
  • Documented competence in caring for persons with AIDS.
  • Clinical knowledge of long term, subacute, geriatric, ventilator and HIV care.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of MDS required.
  • Completion of an Orientation Program in caring for persons with AIDS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and dedication to customer service.
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
