Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Chief Quality Officer, the Director of Safety is responsible for ensuring the safety of Versiti employees. This includes developing and promoting a safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations, developing and implementing health and safety policies, procedures and training across Versiti, as well as specific programs and training required for the work performed by Versiti employees.Implements initiatives to prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards.

Responsibilities:
- Planning * Develops plans for Versiti Safety, including annual goals and plans which support a safe workplace.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of Versiti’s compliance to OSHA requirements and other applicable regulations with plans to correct deficiencies.
- Researches methodologies and practices to improve safety culture and performance.
- Safety Leadership
- Monitors changes in and ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations
- Develops metrics, tracks and trends data, and progress against annual safety goals, and makes visible to the organization.
- Develops systematic processes to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents,
- Develops systematic processes to identify hazards and mitigate
- Works with operations leadership staff to develop and implement effective programs or initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards.
- Develops and provides Versiti-wide safety programs, policies, procedures, education, and training to include safety orientation, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, use of PPE, blood borne pathogens, and chemical hygiene.
- Works collaboratively with Human Resources to develop and implement comprehensive program to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses, and return employees to work safely, and to ensure that records of work-related injuries and illnesses are maintained.
- Ensures required regulatory reporting is completed on time
- Assess effectiveness of safety program activities and implement changes to improve results and achieve objectives.
- Business Continuity/Emergency Preparedness
- Coordinates the development and maintenance of Business Continuity Plans for Versiti
- Develops and conducts drills to test the effectiveness of the Business Continuity/Emergency Preparedness Plan
- Financial Management
- Develops and manages departmental budget
- Serves as liaison for Safety with Workers Compensation Carrier
- Human Resource Management
- Accountable for hiring, development, performance coaching and review, termination, and other personnel action for direct reports in compliance with Versiti human resources policies.
- Develops effective safety team
- GENERAL DUTIES
- Delivers service aligned with department guiding principles.
- Supports Versiti’s mission, vision, and values as well as departmental goals and objectives.
- Responsible for maintaining strict confidentiality of information and records at all times.
- Maintains required records, reports, and files pertaining to areas of responsibility.
- Displays commitment to continuous learning, including own professional development as well as sharing information and learning with other team members.
- Represents the department and Versiti at designated meetings.
- Collaborates with Safety Team in process improvement.
- Maintains ongoing focus on teamwork and communication to improve processes that ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Education- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in safety management, environmental sciences, occupational health, or related field required
- 10+ years of corporate safety experience required
- 4-6 years of management experience required
- Experience implementing awareness campaigns and techniques to create and maintain a strong safety culture required
- Experience implementation of progressive/proactive safety solutions throughout a large, complex organization required
- Experience working with multiple business groups and managing/reconciling their diverse and sometimes conflicting priorities required
- Experience working across multiple facilities in a dispersed geographical area preferred
- Experience in working with Workers Compensation carriers preferred
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and best practices in safety (Including OSHA, DOT, EPA, NRC, IATA, EPA, NFPA, and radiation safety) required
- Ability to interpret regulations and provide guidance required
- Solid understanding and ability to drive behavior based safety in a healthcare organization and ability to create programs that support a 24/7 safety culture at all levels required
- Ability to develop and sustain collaborative relationships throughout the organization required
- Strong analytical and organizational skills to effectively address complex process issues required
- Ability to multitask and adjust in a fast paced environment required
- Ability to work with staff based in remote locations/job sites throughout the Midwest required
- Strong sense of urgency, results and action-oriented required
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with confidence in order to write, interpret and explain information related to safety both one-on-one and in groups at all levels of the organization required
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required
- Personal computer, telephone, shredder, fax and copy machine required
