Primary Purpose:

The IT Systems Engineer I position serves as the foundation for more senior roles within the IT department. It requires a strong understanding of information technology, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Candidates will possess the experience and skills to assist and serve by providing technical insights to project managers and stakeholders regarding IT system solutions being deployed within the enterprise environment.

The IT Systems Engineer I will be expected to support the design, configuration, delivery and maintenance of IT solutions under the guidance of a Sr. Engineer or Manager. Must have the aptitude to understand and support IT infrastructure, product and platform solutions.

Must be able to support the design and delivery of fundamental IT system initiatives, to include cloud, non-cloud, and hybrid-cloud systems. Work in collaboration with other IT teams, leadership, enterprise business partners, vendors and project/design teams, in all aspects of the secure & reliable hosting of applications throughout Exelon's large & complex enterprise and real time operational environments.

Note: This is a hybrid position (in-office with remote flexibility). Employees are required to be in office at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).

Primary Duties:

  • Participates in discussions with business partners and vendors to gather information. Assist with supporting leadership, architecture, project teams and end users to identify system requirements. Assists with writing system specifications, logical & physical architecture diagrams, and implementation plans. Delivers practical, efficient, and cost-effective solutions that satisfy business needs, including hands-on configuration, troubleshooting and optimization and supporting metrics for the same. (30%)
  • Work closely with others to assist development of future plans, resource requirements, migration strategies, and project schedules. Provide input into presentations to Engineering and Architecture Review Boards. Understand the current technologies and service offerings within the industry. (25%)
  • Responsible for engineering, documenting, implementing and supporting solutions at the component level, including hands-on configuration, troubleshooting and optimization and supporting metrics for the same. (20%)
  • Provide supporting data to leadership and peers about risks identified during business impact analysis, site risk assessments and disaster recovery planning. Design, support and maintain custom system integration with other platforms, specific to the needs of the customers. Maintain relevancy and knowledge in current and evolving emerging IT systems technologies. (15%)
  • Develop technical knowledge and business acumen within discipline or function. (10%)

Job Scope:

The scope of this role requires but not limited to the following:

  • Support for the delivery and maintenance of IT solutions related to the Cyber, Fiber Optics, SmartGrid, and WAN backhaul technologies (MPLS routing and switching)
  • Deployment, integration of new systems designed by others but used in the BGE service territory.
  • Accurately execute IT changes assigned.
  • Uphold all security and cyber requirements in the daily work tasks along with identifying and reporting areas that are failing to meet those requirements.
  • Provide support for all patching and upgrade activities
  • Support and implement security controls mandated by CISS, ITSCP, OTSGP, and TSA programs
  • Support UComm MPLS Ops on-call rotation (across all OpCos)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Computer Networking with 2 - 4 years' experience in IT infrastructure design, application design, cloud computing, disaster/recovery, or 4+ years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
  • Experience with system administration.
  • Experience with drafting technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and apply skillset beyond the day-to-day operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technical resources and collaborate to solve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information in non-technical terminology (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated strong teamwork skills with self-motivation in a rapidly evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry trends.
  • Basic knowledge of financial impact analysis.
  • Troubleshooting & Monitoring: Understand basic monitoring concepts and how tools are used to meet those requirements. Perform basic independent troubleshooting by looking through logs and can investigate and fix simple code issues. May require help to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Cloud Technologies: Provide technical expertise and/or engineering support for cloud solutions Security Basics: Basic understanding of security best practices.
  • Scripting & Automation: Ability to create simple scripts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven, hands-on expertise and knowledge supporting large-scale network infrastructure.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate, Cisco Certified Network Professional, Nokia Routing Specialist I or equivalent networking technical certifications.
  • Extensive experience in the management and configuration of various Cisco, Nokia, RAD, and Siemens RuggedComm device platforms.
  • Detailed understanding of NERC/CIP security requirements.
  • Familiarity and understanding in the operation of Exelon's Utility Network.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Nokia networking infrastructure including physical and virtualized Service Aggregation Routers, Ethernet Service Switches, and network management systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of backhaul transport technologies such as DWDM, MPLS, Carrier Ethernet, LTE, Microwave.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve networking issues.
  • Analyze and formulate solutions to networking issues through re-design, process improvement, and automation integration.
  • Intermediate understanding of programming languages, and an ability to solve engineering problems through scripting and automation.
  • Knowledge of ITIL framework and experience with Service, Configuration, and Change Management processes.
