Position Overview
A Staff Accountant working in the nonprofit sector plays a critical role in maintaining the financial health and accuracy of the organization's accounting records. This position requires a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting, donation tracking, and grant management.The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, assist in financial reporting, prepare budgets, and support the organization's mission through their accounting expertise.
Key Responsibilities- Accounting and Bookkeeping
- Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (Source: SG25 US Finance and Accounting doc).
- Manage general ledger entries and reconcile accounts, including cash, accounts receivable, and payable.
- Process payroll, ensuring compliance with relevant labor laws and tax regulations.
- Financial Reporting
- Prepare financial statements, including statements of activities, financial position, and cash flow, in compliance with GAAP.
- Assist with preparing reports for board meetings, donors, grantors, and other stakeholders.
- Grant and Fund Management
- Track and report restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor-imposed restrictions.
- Monitor grant budgets, spending, and reporting requirements.
- Budgeting and Forecasting
- Collaborate with department heads to create and monitor the annual budget.
- Provide variance analysis and recommendations to address budget discrepancies.
- Compliance and Audit Support
- Ensure the organization's transactions comply with government regulations (e.g., IRS Form 990 reporting).
- Support external auditors during annual audits by providing requested documentation and clarifications.
- Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and implement best practices.
- Assist with the integration of accounting technology, such as ERP software, for operational efficiency
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A CPA license or progress toward certification preferred (Source: SG25-TREND 6 doc).
- Experience: 1-3 years of accounting experience, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Software Proficiency: Familiarity with nonprofit accounting ERP systems, advanced Excel skills, and financial reporting tools (Source: SG25-TREND 6 doc).
- Knowledge: Understanding of GAAP for nonprofits and fund accounting principles.
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to communicate financial information to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
