Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiologist IV to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of microbiological principles, techniques, and laboratory management. As a senior microbiologist, you will be responsible for overseeing complex research, experiments, and projects involving the identification, analysis, and characterization of microorganisms.

You will work closely with other scientists and teams to ensure the accuracy of results and contribute to the development of innovative solutions in microbiology.

For Remote: Quarterly 1-2 day site visits to CDC Headquarters in Atlanta, GA for in-person OLSA meetings and with other CDC partners, including retreats, team meetings, project presentations, project meetings and working meetings, where face-to-face interactions are critical for accomplishing the contract tasks.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as subject matter expert on antimicrobial resistance and clinical microbiology.
  • Attend routine team and project meetings focused on domestic and global testing activities.
  • Convene meetings and working groups with POCs and SMEs to assess available data on testing methods and capacities.
  • Perform literature reviews to assess available evidence and data on diagnostic methods.
  • Summarize and compare performance characteristics of diagnostic methods, both phenotypic (e.g., antimicrobial susceptibility testing [AST], carbapenems production testing) and molecular (PCR-based and WGS-based).
  • Supports strategy implementation and management of support services in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Meets with program leadership regularly to discuss performance, propose initiatives, establish priorities, and provide updates on tasks and projects.
  • Provides expert analysis for development of specified strategies and management of support services in or related to clinical microbiology and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Leads strategic planning and communication initiatives in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Works with other subject matter experts to provide a range of support to identify priorities and direct or carry out various projects.
  • Coordinates multi-faceted and multi-sectoral collaborations and projects related to clinical microbiology, public health, and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Integrates their subject matter expertise into products and strategies as prioritized by the branch.
  • Convenes and/or contributes subject matter expertise to assigned internal and external working groups (examples include CLSI and ASM) aimed at informing and/or developing key documents, guidance, trainings, or recommendations.
  • Lends support in building and sustaining successful cross-partner collaboration capable of providing a range of subject matter support and services.
  • Coordinates communications and collaborations with scientific industry partners to explore opportunities for informing or adopting novel solutions to achieve CDC priorities and implement CDC strategies.
  • Provides expertise to identify, assess, and/or implement new technologies to improve detection, characterization, and prevention of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Provides oversight for multiple client engagements by managing several multi-faceted programs and deliverables.
  • Site visit travel as required to educate personnel at regional lab, state public health labs (SPHL), federal partners (FDA, CMS, EPA, NASA), or international partners as part of GAIHN and GARLRN as related to antibiotic resistance and healthcare associated pathogens.
  • Present project/research results at appropriate meetings or conferences as needed by CEMB, either in-person or virtually. Contractor may be required to deliver presentations at professional conferences to present emergency planning and preparedness best practices at preparedness-related conferences.

Qualifications:

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong expertise in microbial identification, characterization, and experimentation.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, sequencing, and gene editing.
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools and statistical software for data analysis.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety protocols and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6-8 years of laboratory experience, with a focus on microbiological research.
  • Extensive experience with microbial cultures, molecular techniques, and data analysis.
  • Proven track record in leading research projects and mentoring junior staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Published research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in biosafety level (BSL) 2 or 3 laboratories.

The salary range for this $105,000 - $108,000 annually.
