The Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, in collaboration with the Chief of Dental Services and the Hospital of Saint Raphael's (HSR) Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Residency Program Director, participates in the operation of the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program through oversight and training of residents in the delivery of comprehensive oral surgery services in the out-patient clinics, hospital in-patient care, and operating room treatment; by providing direct patient care; and by coordinating and providing lectures, seminars, and clinical demonstrations to residents.

Responsibilities:

  • 1. Overall Responsibilities include: Oversee and enforce hospital and department policies for quality, safety, convenience, and cost effectiveness of patient care in the adult dental services and supervision of the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residents treating patients in clinic and operating room, and reports directly to the Chief of Dental Services.
  • 2. Coordinates with the OMFS Program Director at HSR in successful oversight of the OMFS Residency program at Yale- New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH):
  • 3. Establishes OMFS residents' schedules at Y-NHH (didactics and lectures, clinical patient care, operating rooms, on-call, trauma and rotations) in collaboration with other directors and other teaching programs cooperating with Y-NHH dental service;
  • 4. Actively participates in bi-annual evaluations of all residents and visiting students with feedback;
  • 5. In coordination with the Chief of Dentistry and residency directors, provides a scientific and evidence-based didactic program to the OMFS, GPR and Pediatric Dental Residents, which includes but is not limited to, teaching a biomedical or clinical subject, organizing and distributing annual curriculums, and reinforcing syllabi standards and quality;
  • 6. Provides night and weekend coverage for patients and ensures appropriate OMFS residents and OMFS attending faculty availability. Ensures the accuracy of all after-hours billing and documentation;
  • 7. Provides direct resident supervision 40%-50% of scheduled hours per week in the Adult Dental Center, OR, and other satellite facilities. Provides resident supervision when attending faculty is unable to be present in clinic in coordination with the program director;
  • 8. For full-time positions, an optional 10-20% of scheduled hours per week for administrative and scholarly activities such as grant writing, research and publications. If not used effectively, will be directed towards patient care or resident supervision;
  • 9. Is actively involved in the Dental Grand Rounds as both presenter and coordinator;
  • 10. Capacity to manage in a teaching hospital environment. In collaboration with other clinical departments and chiefs of service, develops a resident rotation schedule and ensures an appropriate educational experience for assigned residents by providing oversight of patient care, and delivery of an educational curriculum.
  • 11. Participates in the operational success of the department through patient care, regulatory compliance, and other administrative responsibilities:
  • 12. Personally sees patients up to 40% of scheduled hours per week in the Adult Dental Center, OR, and other satellite facilities, in coordination with program director;
  • 13. Ensures compliance with ADA, JCAHO, CMS, DPH, CODA and other external agency standards;
  • 14. Ensures the timely and accurate completion of all medical and dental records to departmental and hospital standards;
  • 15. Ensures proper usage and maintenance of the practice equipment by residents and staff;
  • 16. Ensures accurate and timely completion of all medical and dental records
  • 17. Ensures residents and staff uses the practice equipment safely and appropriately
  • 18. Participates in hospital administrative committees as requested;
  • 19. Surgeon agrees to maintain an active license to practice dentistry and to maintain a permit for Sedation/Anesthesia in the state of Connecticut, an unrestricted federal Drug Enforcement Administration Controlled Substance Registration for Practitioners and State of Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration for Practitioners
  • 20. Provide leadership to all areas of the oral and maxillofacial surgery service, in particular, in serving as site director for OMS residents rotating to Y-NHH from the training program at HSR. and coordinate and collaborate with the program director at HSR
  • 21. Works with support and administrative personnel to improve:
  • 22. Patient recruitment to the office;
  • 23. Patient satisfaction;
  • 24. Information flow as provided by hospital medical records and electronic resources.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

D.M.D/ D.D.S. or equivalent professional degree and a CODA approved training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Preference will be given to applicants who have an MD degree, additional specialty training and board certification or have a MPH or PhD.

EXPERIENCE

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon must have at least three years of continuous clinical and teaching experience in an oral and maxillofacial program Residency training may be included in experience. Must be eligible for ABOMS.

LICENSURE

CT Dental License, CT Medical License if applicable, CT Conscious sedation/ GA License, CT Controlled Substance License preferred.

Per state statute you have one year to obtain your controlled substance and sedation license. If you are from CT, this is required prior to employment.
