Overview:

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D School of Medicine is searching for a Nurse Practitioner. This position will be under physician supervision, provides consultative and follow up medical care to patients of varying type and acuity both hospitalized and outpatient.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess, evaluate and provide recommendations to treating provider for psychiatric patients in the
  • Emergency Department and/or Medical Floors.
  • Will work with unit physicians, social workers, residents and nurses to provide psychiatric care.
  • Will work under the supervision of WMed Psychiatrist.
  • See patients in a timely manner who are seeking psychiatric care.
  • Coordinate treatment with other providers and family.
  • Ability to handle psychiatric emergencies.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric treatments.
  • Knowledge in Michigan Mental Health Code major components in psychiatric care.
  • Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature.
  • Provides input into the strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of the NP service.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Three years’ experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Three Years’ experience with Psychiatry patients.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed in the State of Michigan as a Nurse Practitioner or eligible to become licensed in the State of Michigan as a Nurse Practitioner required.
  • Michigan Controlled Substance License is required.
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHMP) Board Certification required or eligibility for PMHMP Certification.
  • BCLS certification preferred.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and proficiency in word processing and file management using Word and other software as required by the department. (Portal, Cerner, PACS, WMed EPIC).
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
  • Ability to make quality, independent decisions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows preventive measures to minimize exposure to blood and air borne pathogens.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in grammar and spelling skills.
  • Ability to operate automated standard office equipment such as multi-line phone system, transcription equipment, copier, fax machine, shredder, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehends, and transmits complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
