Survey CAD Technician
Overview:
NV5 is seeking a skilled and motivated Survey CAD Technician to join our Northern California survey team, who will play an essential role in the preparation, analysis, and interpretation of survey data for a diverse range of projects, contributing to high-impact work across private and public sectors.
In this position, you’ll be responsible for creating precise and detailed survey drawings, assisting in project documentation, and providing critical technical support for infrastructure projects in fields such as utilities, energy, educational facilities, airports, and land development.As a Survey CAD Technician, you will have the unique opportunity to work directly under experienced survey professionals, gaining valuable, hands-on experience that enhances your technical skills and industry knowledge.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare topographic and boundary survey drawings, Record of Survey maps, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, utility and right-of-way mapping, parcel and subdivision maps, and legal exhibits.
- Assist in writing and interpreting legal descriptions, survey maps, easements, and right-of-way documents. Aid in drafting precise layout of property boundaries based on legal descriptions.
- Research, compile, and analyze historical data, including Records of Survey, plats, government land office documents, right-of-way maps, and utility sketches.
- Provide critical support to field surveyors by processing field data, generating search coordinates for field crews, and working with data such as field notes, photogrammetric data, grid coordinates, and survey points.
- Use Civil 3D to create accurate 3D models, manage terrain data, and support High Definition Scanning (HDS) processes for project mapping.
- Perform mathematical computations for property and easement layouts, proposed construction, traverse closures, and other survey tasks related to engineering and construction projects.
Qualifications:
- NSPS Level III Survey Technician Certification preferred, or 2-5 years of relevant survey mapping experience.
- Associate’s degree in CAD, GIS, or a related survey field is highly desirable.
- Possession of a California LSIT Certificate is a plus.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Civil 3D (version 2013, 2016 or later) with field-to-finish capabilities.
- Experience creating and managing 3D terrain models from classic survey data.
- Familiarity with High Definition Scanning (HDS) and survey data post-processing using tools like NGS OPUS.
- Knowledge of field and office surveying methods, best practices, and the mathematical procedures essential to accurate surveying.
- Ability to interpret complex legal descriptions, survey maps, and engineering plans.
- Communication and Team Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective client and team collaboration.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving office methods in support of survey project management.
- Basic understanding of project budget requirements and a proactive approach to time management, focusing on client satisfaction.
