The Opportunity

The Principal Firmware Engineer, at our Little Canada/St. Paul, MN location, will be responsible for designing firmware in electromechanical medical devices in Abbott’s Electrophysiology medical device division. You will be part of our fast growing, and highly visible product development team focused on planning and delivering of custom in-house embedded software applications used in Electrophysiology labs.

We are looking for a detail- oriented engineer to apply engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solutions for technical problems.

What You’ll Work On
  • Leads the architecture, implementation, development, enhancements, and modifications to software, test, tool designs, cases, scripts, procedures, and/or code based on strategic analysis.
  • Working from requirement specifications, develops, maintains, and updates detailed design and interface specifications
  • Debugs, troubleshoots, and isolates software problems as well as offers strategic solutions, analysis, and advice regarding identified issues for future development
  • Presents at design reviews; documents and resolves issues as directed.
  • Contributes to and supports reviews held by other engineers on related projects and provide useful feedback
  • Ensures compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO design controls
  • Supports and leads design reviews
  • Solves complex and diverse technical problems by applying sound judgment, creativity, appropriate data analysis, and technical expertise.
  • Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources (regulatory, customers, etc.) to ensure development decisions meet regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Provides technical assistance for diagnosing design and manufacturing quality problems and leads root-cause analysis of failures.
  • Provides mentorship and technical development oversight for less tenured team members.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Software Engineering/Computer Engineering
  • 15+ years of development experience using C/C++ in an embedded environment for micro-controllers or Linux systems
  • Software engineering experience within a rigid development and configuration management process.
  • Experience with unit and integration level testing and automated testing.
  • Experience with MS Office
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field (education may substitute for some years of experience)
  • Experience with Embedded Software Development within the regulated medical field.
  • Linux Kernel, Yocto and Qt development experience
  • Experience in programming languages such as Python, Java, SQL, C#, Matlab
  • Experience of low-level real time system development
  • Experience with cybersecurity for embedded devices (threat modeling/CSRA or digital signing preferred)
  • Previous experience in cardiac electrophysiology and/or cardiac rhythm management
  • Familiarity with IEC 62304 for medical device software, and IEC 60601 family of standards

The base pay for this position is $127,300.00 – $254,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
