Part-time Science Lab Assistant

Overview:

The Scince Lab Assistant assists in the coordination of activities in the General Education Science labs to assist instructors in the preparation of instructional materials and in laboratory demonstrations; to operate and manage specialized instruments and equipment; to manage lab and materials fees budgets including ordering, receiving, and monitoring balances; and to perform related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain an open and safe facility.
  2. Assist in laboratory set up, including mixing and dispensing solutions, preparing specimens, and creating helpful signs and handouts.
  3. Set up of specialized instruments, equipment, and demonstrations, and assist with the demonstration of the proper operation of equipment, instruments, and supplies used in lab work.
  4. Issue equipment and supplies to instructors and monitor when returned.
  5. Monitor the working condition of all facilities, instruments, and equipment and either perform minor adjustments or call for the needed maintenance.
  6. Demonstrate and maintain a check on safety procedures in the laboratory.
  7. Dispose of used materials and specimens and, in general, keep the entire facility neat and organized.
  8. Perform general clerical duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of laboratory and classrooms.
  9. Maintain records and documentation on supplies, instruments, and equipment. Note quantities of all supplies, where they are located and how to obtain them.
  10. Create and maintain records of the different lab setups.
  11. Use the District computer system to make purchase order requests and track items through receipt and payment.
  12. Develop and maintain spreadsheets to monitor expenditures against the amounts allocated for each of the budgets used in the laboratories.
  13. Work effectively with others in a team environment.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  1. Associate Degree in Science. Bachelor Degree preferred.
  2. Two years of related work experience.
