Counsel, Collections and Services - Remote
This role will be expected to travel at least once a year for a legal team onsite in the San Francisco Bay Area. Given that the Internet Archive is a small organization with a global reach, a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude to taking on projects large and small with a low-ego approach to collaborating across the organization will be important.
Key Responsibilities- Support engineering teams building new services and features;
- Maintain deep knowledge of worldwide content regulations, and laws relating to web scraping and user data requests;
- Counsel on issues that touch upon user uploaded content, such as trust and safety, mis- and disinformation, copyright, intermediary liability, privacy, cyber security and government requests for information;
- Interpret and operationalize worldwide regulations that affect the organization's operations;
- Draft, review and negotiate contracts for all departments;
- Organize and maintain the organization’s contracts and other important legal documentation;
- Manage pro bono counsel; and
- Represent the organization at workshops, meetings, and in collaborations.
- A J.D. and license to practice law;
- Five or more years of experience either in a law firm, or in-house at a library, non-profit or technology company;
- The ideal candidate will have deep subject matter expertise in US and EU intermediary liability regimes;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to explain complex legal issues in everyday plain language for different types of audiences;
- Knowledge of digital libraries/archives, scholarly communications, data management, or open knowledge services, concepts, and practices preferred;
- Flexibility, self-reliance, a sense of humor, and a creative approach to problem-solving;
- Demonstrable history of providing practical guidance to solve complex, time-sensitive problems in close partnership with a variety of cross-functional teams and external partners;
- Experience working in a remote-first organization; and
