Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to obtain capillary and venipuncture blood samples from patients in a variety of community settings. Perform routine laboratory tests. Collect and update socio-economic and health information from patients and assists physicians and nurses during examinations.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Answers phone calls, provides information, takes messages, and routes calls.

Visits clients in their homes, primary care centers, clinics, schools, institutions, shelters, health fairs and other settings to collect, transport and process blood and other specimens; and obtains and updates socio-economic and health information.

Assists physicians during examinations, and takes and records the patients temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, height and other measurements.
Assists patients in undressing for examinations and assists in lifting and positioning patients for examinations and treatments.
Administers treatment and medications as directed by physicians and performs vision, hearing and other screening tests.
Operates, cleans, sterilizes, calibrates and performs preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments that have low operator variability and performs quality control procedures for tests and instruments.

Registers patients, records financial and medical information on forms, prepares and witnesses consent forms, schedules appointments, processes patient records, maintains patient flow during clinic sessions and maintains clinic appointment book.

Operates a computer terminal to enter, store and retrieve information; compiles records; and reports routine statistical information.
Calculates figures and totals; posts information on forms and records; computes and collects patients service fees; and reconciles cash collections with receipt book.
Requisitions, controls and monitors inventory levels of supplies and materials and maintains files, records and laboratory logs.

Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

Certificate from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the American Medical Technologists, the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School OR Completion of a Medical Services training program of the United States Armed Forces OR Certified Phlebotomy Technician from a nationally accredited organization (such as National Performance Specialists, National Healthcare Association, National Phlebotomy Association, etc.) OR Licensed Practical Nurse through KY Board of Nursing OR Five (5) years of medical assisting experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.
Must work a varied schedule.
Certification from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or by the Commission on Allied Health Education Programs.

Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history.
