Work location: Milwaukee, WI (Wantable Cafe)
  • Must have availability between 6:30am - 6:30pm M-F and Saturdays between 7:00am-3:00pm for a total of 32+ hours a week.

Job Summary:

The Line/Prep Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving dishes according to provided recipes, ensuring quality and timeliness. This role requires proficiency in using various kitchen equipment and utensils. Additionally, the position involves occasional front-of-house duties such as preparing coffee drinks, operating the POS system, and assisting with customer service.

Responsibilities:

  • Set-up and stock food items and other necessary supplies.
  • Prepare food items by cutting, chopping, mixing, and preparing sauces.
  • Pre-assemble menu items or ingredients for quick service.
  • Prepare, plate, and serve orders based on customer orders.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Collaborate with servers to ensure orders are completed correctly and on time.
  • Strictly adhere to cleanliness requirements and food safety standards in food handling and storage.
  • Clean and sanitize cooking surfaces at the end of each shift.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness; including but not limited to utensils, equipment, floors, cafe dishes, appliances.
  • Perform inventory checks and complete food storage logs.
  • Ensure kitchen equipment is functioning properly and report any maintenance issues.
  • Prepare beverages according to standard recipes.
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward coworkers and customers to foster a collaborative and enjoyable work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by cafe management in order to meet business needs.
Requirements
  • 1–3 years of experience in a kitchen environment, particularly in a line cook or prep cook role. Cross-trained barista experience is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently in a high-pressure environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with kitchen equipment (e.g., knives, grills, ovens, coffee equipment, and blenders).
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with kitchen staff and front-of-house team.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with colleagues.
  • ServSafe Certification desired.
  • Ability to stand for long periods (up to 8 hours per shift).
  • Positive attitude and professionalism, with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service.
