Founded in 1965, the Samueli School of Engineering educates more than 5,000 combined, undergraduate and graduate students with an integrative approach that blends fundamentals, research and hands-on experience. The School's aim is to unleash innovation, create opportunities and inspire ingenuity.The School's faculty members are leaders in their disciplines who have achieved worldwide recognition for their research and dedicated teaching. The School includes six academic departments. Under the leadership of the Dean, the School pursues research that is timely, socially responsible and cutting edge, and works in partnership with industry, state, and federal agencies to promote the transfer of research to applications that benefit society.
The Office of Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) serves prospective and current graduate students with the Samueli School of Engineering. Our office works closely with all departments and programs in the school, as well as with the Graduate Division.The office provides services including: recruitment and admission, general counseling and advice, graduate funding including fellowships, career development, graduation and conferral of degrees. The office serves as the final school-wide stop for approval of petitions, advancement to candidacy, degree conferrals and other academic processes.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS), the Graduate Affairs Programs Director is responsible for the coordination, implementation the management of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering Graduate programs, including management of all graduate student administrative services, and all operations supporting graduate students in the school.
On the academic side, the Graduate Affairs Programs Director oversees short- and long-range planning, and establishing goals and policies to meet UC and UCI growth trends and targets including population demographics, fiscal constraints, and legislative, system-wide, and UCI rules and regulations.Supervises, trains, and evaluates student services advisors. Provides technical assistance to advisors on complex issues such as exceptions to policy, recommendations to change department and program policy, and decision-making approval on precedent-setting actions.
Oversees counseling to students involving a variety of student issues such as admissions, degree requirements, international student support, student programming, student intervention, capstone, thesis, and dissertation preparation, and degree conferral.
Participates with the Associate Dean in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Graduate Student Affairs operations. Represents the school graduate student services function on committees and other organization entities.
Manages catalogue revisions, new course proposals and revisions, program modifications. Leads and coordinates career services for all graduate students in the school.
On the operations side, the Director interfaces and coordinates with department, school, and campus administrators to support graduate student funding, including but not limited to: internal and external fellowships, graduate student employment GSR and ASE contracts and implementation, multi-year funding packages and guarantees, transition and bridge funding, matching institutional support for grants as it relates to student services.The director also supports or coordinates all functions related to graduate students: industry and alumni relations, communications (including news and websites), events planning, data tracking and analysis (including but not limited to admissions, enrollment, graduation, placement and alumni, financial support, and rankings).

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $69,500- $89,000 (Annual).
Required:
- Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
- Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Proven ability to identify stakeholders, assess their needs and concerns, and engage them in change initiatives to achieve buy-in and support.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to think strategically, anticipate consequences, and develop innovative solutions to achieve objectives.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems using persuasion and leadership.

- Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Ability to adapt communication and influence strategies based on situational dynamics and organizational context.
- Proven experience with student data analysis, with a strong understanding of reporting methods and tools.
- Skill in providing effective training and development.
- Demonstrated effective staff supervision skills.
- Experience in developing and managing budgets, forecasts, and financial plans to support organizational goals and strategic initiatives.
- Skill in influencing others without formal authority, using persuasive communication and negotiation techniques to drive change. Strong conflict resolution skills to address resistance and barriers to change constructively and collaboratively.
- Demonstrated experience with creating and implementing graduate student career development programs.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 4-6 years Advising and counseling graduate students. Direct supervision of others Working in a University setting supporting graduate programs.
