Overview:

Department 498 is responsible for the design of Columbia Class Mechanical Systems and Hull Valves and Standard Valves, and supporting procurement of material for these systems and installation and test on the ship. Department 498 engineers provide support for the development, installation and test of Columbia Class submarine mechanical systems in the area of weapons handling and shipping, countermeasure launchers, weapons launch, retractable masts, steering & diving systems, hatches and doors, towed systems, hull and backup valves, standard valves, valve operating linkages, anchor handling system, and other mechanical systems.

Department 498 engineers are responsible for resolution of design problems through Change Notices (CN’s), analysis supporting design changes and resolution of design problems, responding to supplier problems via Vendor Information Requests (VIR’s), providing oversight of suppliers, reviewing test forms, reviewing logistics technical documentation products, and resolution of construction and material procurement problems.

In addition to the Department 498 engineer responsibilities described above, responsibilities of this job position include peer reviewing the work of less experienced engineers, particularly engineering review and disposition of changes notices and VIR responses.

This job position also includes checking the analytical work of other and less experienced engineers. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required for this position to be able to effectively provide constructive feedback to less experienced engineers upon review of their work.

Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home. This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • 4+ years of related experience
  • Experience performing mechanical systems static and dynamic analysis
  • Experience developing designs of mechanical components and systems
  • Reading and interpreting electronic drawings and 3D models

Preferred:

  • 5-10 years of related experience
  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering
  • Experience with Engineering Analysis using Finite Element Analysis, especially ABAQUS
  • Identify causes of technical and process problems and identify corrective actions
  • Resolution of construction problems

  • Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in a collaborative environment.
