The Opportunity
As a Principal Research Engineer/Scientist, you will provide technical mentorship to a highly collaborative team of imaging scientists, software developers, and scientists in medicine and biology to solve image and data analysis problems in the field of Digital Pathology.
You will initiate, direct, and execute research and development activities for technology assessment, internal project collaborations, and commercial medical devices. Make strategic decisions and provide direction for the team's R&D activities in the field of artificial intelligence, image processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, and data mining.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as technical lead for the design and development of innovative algorithms to analyze histopathology images and data.
- Design and implement algorithms and software platforms for prototyping and commercial product development.
- Make strategic decisions to optimize algorithms and platforms for efficiency, accuracy, performance, and scalability.
- Conceive, design, conduct and lead advanced independent or multi-disciplinary research driven by strategic business needs.
- Conceive, plan, and execute projects; define project requirements, deliveries, and time lines; track progress and ensure on time quality results.
- Keep up-to-date with and assess technology advances, the competitive landscape, and job training requirements in the medical device industry.
- Make major contributions to strategic directions and projects in the Roche group using technology and application expertise.
- Create strategic input for the creation of the Intellectual Property portfolio of the group.
- Partner with research, development and product development teams within Roche Pharma and Diagnostics; network with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., pathologists, biochemists, instrumentation engineers, software engineers, and marketing representatives) and subject matter experts in the Roche group and in academia.
- Provide technical direction, mentorship, guidance and feedback to others.
- Other duties may be assigned by management in the pursuit of the operational goals of the group.
- PhD Degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5 years of industry R&D experience with strong software development and engineering for image or data analysis algorithms using ML/AI technology.
- Proven track record of technical leadership to deliver innovative analysis and software solutions.
- Proven track record of publications and intellectual property generation from own work.
- Experienced technical lead of design and development projects for medical devices in the field of biomedical image data analysis.
- Reputation as an emerging leader in the field through performance and accomplishments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to review and evaluate writing of others in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Ability to build and grow teams that solve complex problems using creative ideas, state-of-the-art knowledge, and best engineering practice.
- Extensive experience with commonly used Deep Learning models and frameworks (e.g., Pytorch, Fastai, TensorFlow)
- Ability to champion scientific principles and to share expert analytical and mathematical skills.
- Expert knowledge and deep understanding of image analysis, pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision, and data mining methods.
- Strong understanding of software architecture for scalable high-performance systems; expert in prototyping and commercial product development languages.
- Expert understanding of biomedical image data, especially pathology images.
- Ability to champion R&D work following best practices in a regulated industry.
