Job Summary:

Aptive Resources is seeking a dedicated and skilled Board-Certified General Oncology Physician to join our team at the VA Western New York Healthcare System. The Oncology Physician will provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in an inpatient and outpatient clinic setting.
The physician will evaluate, triage and prioritize consults from primary care and other services for outpatient oncology consultations. The physician will obtain medical history, conduct physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients.
The physician will coordinate medical management and care with Primary Care providers and other personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system. The Physician will perform administrative tasks as assigned such as peer review and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations.

The physician will provide oncology on-call services as assigned. The physician(s)’ care shall cover the range of oncology surgery services as would be provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility and the standard of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding currently recognized national standards American Board of Internal Medicine Medical Oncology Board.

Primary Responsibilities:

Clinic or OR Schedule: 40 Hours per week per provider during administrative hours; specific clinic times to be negotiated with closer to start date.

Primary Location: Buffalo VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215-1129

Clinic Travel: There will be an expectation to conduct clinic at the Batavia VAMC and Olean CBOC in accordance with patient volume for oncology services. The frequency of clinic at these locations will be reoccurring with a minimum of one day per quarter and a maximum of one day per week for each location.

Batavia is 36.4 miles from the primary location in Buffalo. Olean is 75.5 miles from the primary location in Buffalo.

Normal Clinic Hours: 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

Off-hours Coverage: Contractor must make the Contractor’s physician(s) available on-call during all hours when the facility clinic is closed, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  1. On-call contractor’s physician(s) must be available at all times for phone consultations with VA residents and physicians.
  2. On-call providers must be available within 15 minutes by phone and on-site, within 60 minutes.
  3. On-call schedule will be made in conjunction with VA staff oncology

Clinical Load: Approximate clinical load: 5 hours of inpatient coverage per week; 26 hours of bookable clinical time per week; remaining duty time dedicated to clinical follow-up and other assigned tasks such as tumor board discussions.

For bookable clinical time, approximate case load is 2 patients per hour.
  • Physician will be required to attended quality improvement meetings, staff meetings, and oncology-specific conferences.
  • Electronic Medical Records: Enter notes and maintain patient records in a paperless medical record system.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in peer review and quality improvement activities to maintain high standards of care.
  • Committee Membership: Engage in committee memberships as required, contributing to the governance and improvement of medical practices at the facility.
  • Compliance: Understand and abide by the Medical Bylaws of the facility and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Must hold a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD or DO) or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Must be currently certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalency.
  • Licensure: Must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must be Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine Medical Oncology Board.
  • Must have a clear and active DEA
  • Strong clinical and surgical skills with a commitment to providing high-quality patient care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for educating and counseling patients and their families.
  • Proficiency in using electronic medical records and maintaining accurate patient documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement and participation in quality improvement activities.
