Southern Star is currently seeking highly motivated and energetic students or recent graduates to join our team as summer interns. The Drafting Design intern is exposed to a variety of project-based assignments and will receive mentorship, detailed orientation and training, and valuable work assignments.

Internship Overview:

This internship provides the opportunity to participate in the full life cycle of pipeline projects from design to as-built. Successful candidates will be exposed to a variety of design disciplines within the natural gas industry and focus on the project cycle from development through design and execution.

Activities can include but are not limited to survey, mapping, mechanical and electrical design. Interns will have the opportunity to see real projects go from the design phase to observing construction in the field.

Interns will typically support and/or shadow experienced Drafting Designers as they complete their day-to-day tasks, performance of assignments, operations, and unique assignments that support larger projects. They may participate in additional activities or events, allowing them to build a strong network within the Southern Star community and with fellow interns.

Highlights:

  • This is a 12-week, competitively paid summer internship starting in May and ending in August.
  • Interns work 40 hours per week with paid company holidays and are often provided opportunities to travel to the field with Project Engineering staff.
  • A taxable housing stipend may be provided to obtain housing near the Southern Star work location if the successful candidate’s permanent home address and current college address is determined by Southern Star to be greater than reasonable driving distance from the assigned work location.
  • Participants are eligible for full-time employment upon successful completion of the Southern Star internship program pending graduation and open position availability.

Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

Mapping:

  • Learn how to prepare detailed Construction Workspace Plans, Excavation Hazard Maps, MAOP Maps, Easement Exhibits, Alignment Sheets, HDD Plan & Profile, and Staking files in accordance with company standards, procedures, and specifications for use in modification or construction of natural gas pipelines, pipeline relocations / reroutes, and class location studies.
  • Learn how to prepare maps required to support FERC filings and to obtain permits from state agencies.

Mechanical:

  • Learn how to prepare detailed Mechanical and Fabrication, Gate Layout, Site Plans, Enlarged Site Plans, Section views, Mechanical Details, P&ID’s, Station Piping, and other drawings or sketches as needed in accordance with company standards, procedures, and specifications for use in modification or construction of natural gas pipelines, mainline valves, launcher / receiver, drips, filter separators, measurement and regulation settings, and stations.

Electrical E&I:

  • Learn how to prepare detailed electrical Site Plan, Hazardous Area Classification, Electrical Yard Plans, Conduit & Cable Schedules, Block Diagram, P&ID’s, Electrical and Instrumentation details in accordance with company standards, procedures, and specifications for use in modification or construction of natural gas pipelines, remote controlled valves, measurement and regulation settings, and station PLC’s.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old by the start of the summer internship assignment.
  • You must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 after each completed semester/term.
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • You must be entering your junior or senior year of your degree program.
  • You must be currently enrolled in a Technical College Program pursuing an associate degree or a junior or senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree related to Computer Aided Drafting/Design or other related discipline.
