Lab Quality Coordinator; Full Time; Days

Serving as Laboratory Quality Coordinator, this position reports to the Laboratory Quality Director and is responsible and accountable for improving the quality and efficiency of clinical and operational processes for the Department of Laboratory Services.
Works in conjunction with the Quality Director to provide support for the departmental Quality Assurance, Regulatory Preparedness, and Safety Programs. Works with the individual Lab Managers to assure regulatory readiness, quality testing, and standardization of processes/procedures.

Provides oversight and support when necessary for special projects including but not limited to method evaluation, instrument implementation, and interface validation.

Performs and functions as the department expert for data report generation. Participates in the investigation and documentation of Laboratory Safety Events.

Responsibilities:

  • 1. Assist in the coordination of the QA/QI programs for the department including the maintenance of the Quality Management Plan.
  • 2. Monitor various quality metrics such as turn-around time reports, specimen rejections, critical value compliance, and others identifying trends and suggesting corrective action as needed.
  • 3. Provide support in ensuring regulatory compliance and readiness to the assigned areas within the department including rounding and assistance with documentation preparation.
  • 4. Maintain an up-to-date familiarity with CAP, DPH (CT, RI, NYS), CLIA, and JC regulations to ensure the laboratory is compliant.
  • 5. Working in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers and Coordinators ensures robust, effective, and comprehensive QC, Proficiency Testing, and Training and Competency Programs are in place.
  • 6. Escalate issues to the attention of the appropriate manager and the Quality Director as needed and in real time.
  • 7. Ensure that procedures are appropriate and common/standardized for laboratories in which this practice is indicated.
  • 8. Provide input, analysis, and structure to the workflow process in an effort to streamline, improve, and optimize processes in areas of responsibility.
  • 9. Assists all laboratory departments with report creation and the generation of laboratory data.
  • 10. Participate in the investigation and documentation of Laboratory Safety Events as needed.
  • 11. Audits the regulatory documentation related to IT functions to include testing of builds/updates, results reporting, and troubleshooting.
  • 12. Serve as the content expert and resource for all modules within MediaLab.
  • 13. Educate Managers on Quality Plan updates and new/revised CAP Lab General Checklist Requirements.
  • 14. Working with the Quality Director, actively participates in departmental meetings and initiatives.
  • 15. Act as a liaison to hospital QA/Safety Department and represent the laboratory on hospital committees as needed.
  • 16. Assist in the coordination of the CAP Proficiency Testing program and the completion of any licensure/certification applications.
  • 17. Maintain annual continuing education to improve management effectiveness and technical expertise.
  • 18. Provides support for special projects, assignments, or other administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION
  • BS Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
  • ASCP eligible or equivalent
  • Master's degree preferred, not required
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a high complexity clinical laboratory required, five (5) or more years preferred.
  • Previous regulatory and/ or quality assurance experience is preferred.

LICENSURE

ASCP certification or equivalent required. Generalist MLS / MT(ASCP) certification is preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory regulatory guidelines (CLSI, CAP, CLIA) and QC, QA, and QI required.
  • Efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design and data analysis.
  • Excellent customer service interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to work as a member of a diverse team is essential
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Strong writing skills required.
  • Proficient in computer software programs, Microsoft Office and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must be able to lift and carry 10 or more pounds. Must be able to travel to offsite locations as needed.
