Rye Country Day School is seeking a Maternity Leave Lower School Psychologist beginning December 3, 2024 until approximately April 4, 2025. Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, Prek-12, college preparatory school located in Westchester County, New York dedicated to providing students with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches.

The Lower School Psychologist works closely with the Lower School Principal, Lower School Assistant Principal, Lower School Learning Specialists, Director of Counseling Support Services, and Lower School faculty and parents/guardians to support students. Included in the Lower School Psychologist’s role are the following:

  • Sees individual Lower School students on an as-needed, short-term basis
  • Works with Lower School students as needed in small groups to support the development of specific social-emotional skills
  • Provides age-appropriate crisis intervention for individual students
  • Supports students in developing advocacy, healthy coping skills, and developmentally appropriate problem-solving skills
  • Makes appropriate referrals outside of school for ongoing care and support
  • Consults and liaises with outside therapists as needed using school documentation
  • Teaches monthly social-emotional classroom lessons across the Lower School grades
  • Serves as a resource for parents/guardians and holds individual parent meetings as needed
  • Serves as a resource for teachers about the emotional development of children; consults regularly with teachers about students of concern and offers tiered strategies for intervention
  • Performs classroom observations of students of concern and works in conjunction with learning specialists to develop a plan to support the student
  • Actively participates in Child Study Team and Support Team meetings alongside learning specialists, administrators, and classroom teachers to address student concerns
  • Keeps student, family, and employee information as confidential; maintains proper documentation in order to keep confidential records and only shares private information on an as needed basis with clear justification
  • Participates as a full member of the Lower School faculty, including attending faculty and grade-level team meetings
  • Maintains credentialing with New York State
  • Supports the mission of the School and performs other related tasks as assigned by administration

Requirements

Desired qualifications:

  • Doctorate in counseling, psychology, school psychology, social work, or related human services field
  • Appropriate New York State licenses and/or certifications
  • Previous counseling experience in a school setting
  • A deep understanding of Responsive Classroom
  • A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members allowing for the ability to connect with the many constituencies of the RCDS community; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Deep and broad knowledge of counseling, learning support, and health and wellness education across the early childhood and elementary developmental stages
  • Proven ability to connect joyfully with students and faculty
  • Experience providing guidance to parents and guardians
  • Experience in running groups with children
  • Experience in classroom observation and developing behavior interventions
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a positive attitude, energy, and an inspiring and entrepreneurial leadership style
  • Strong organizational, management, and execution skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including use of technology
  • Commitment to lifetime learning and professional and personal integrity
