Director of Financial Planning - Tompkins Financial Advisors
Overview:
Responsible for leading financial planning-related activities, including but not limited to retirement planning, wealth preservation and transfer planning, and business succession planning, as well as developing, employing and driving planning-related initiatives that enhance client experience standards efforts across the organization.Will also be the leading business partner to partner with advisors, understand the financial landscape for our clients, create and deliver financial plans that aid client’s in making educated financial decisions. Actively participate as a member of the leadership team contributing to enable the success and growth of the Company.
Flexible Location: This position is located at our Corporate Headquarters office in Ithaca, New York. Tompkins also maintains administrative offices in Pittsford, New York, Syracuse, New York, Batavia, New York, Brewster, New York and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.This position can be based at any of these locations.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and implement the overall strategic plan for financial planning; develop and support initiatives to enhance client experience at Tompkins Financial Advisors (TFA); and coordinate the execution of successful programs across all markets of TFA.
- Work with members of the TFA Leadership Team to identify the breadth of expertise desired from the Planning Team that will be necessary to enable the growth of the overall business, and that of Tompkins Financial Advisors’ affiliates. Where necessary, recruit the talent necessary to realize the breadth of expertise needed for TFA.
- Provide leadership to members of the financial planning team to develop their skill and knowledge of the financial planning process, products, tools, systems and presentation of financial plans.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, understanding their financial objectives, and providing ongoing financial guidance and support. Deliver comprehensive financial planning expertise, including but not limited to retirement planning, wealth preservation and wealth transfer planning, business succession planning, and tax strategies. Conduct regular client meetings to review financial plans, assess progress, and make necessary adjustments based on changing circumstances.
- Partner with colleagues to understand the financial goals of new and existing clients. Determine their current financial state and desired future state, conduct an analysis of the client’s assets and liabilities and educate clients on their financial landscape while providing them with information to aid them in making financial decisions.
- Introduce and assist clients in utilizing financial planning software and the gathering of necessary information to complete financial planning-related analyses.
- Collaborate with Managing Directors to support local business plans by providing indirect leadership to members of the financial planning team, utilizing planning as the lead product to generate revenue, grow new assets under management and retain existing assets.
- Create, distribute and present reports on financial planning, business succession planning and client experience including forecasts, benchmarks, progress towards goals, and opportunities for advancing the business.
- Serve as a resource and partner with Planners, Wealth Advisors, Trust Officers, Commercial Lenders, Branch Managers and Insurance Representatives across the Company’s footprint and support the Power of Partnership “POP” by building trusting relationships will all business line team members and developing credibility for giving and receiving referrals.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of financial planning software, manage the relationship with the vendor, ensure software is kept updated and manage the administrative functions including but not limited to maintaining user access and licenses.
- Coordinate with the Investment Committee to ensure the planning assumptions are aligned with the committee objectives and portfolio projections.
- Conduct presentations to support routine business development activities in the markets, establish relationships with COI’s in the community to increase referral opportunities.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or related field. CFP designation is desired.
- Five (5) years previous experience in financial planning, wealth management or comparable experience and leadership.
- Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
- Ability to budget, forecast, conduct in depth analysis, prepare and present proposals and reports.
- Advanced proficiency in learning software systems and utilizing excel.
- Demonstrated ability to strategically lead and guide teams in person and remotely.

Pay Range: USD $140,000.00 - USD $165,000.00 /Yr.
