Summary:

The Microbiologist II is responsible for conducting microbiological testing, analysis, and research in support of company objectives and regulatory compliance. This role involves working with various microorganisms, ensuring proper laboratory techniques are followed, and maintaining compliance with safety protocols.

The Microbiologist II also provides technical guidance to junior staff and assists in developing protocols and procedures for microbial analysis.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform basic and advanced clinical bacteriology procedures directed at detection, isolation, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and additional phenotypic and molecular characterization and classification or emerging antimicrobial resistance, particularly among carbapenem-resistant organisms.
  • Perform microbiological testing to evaluate and compare various phenotypic and molecular testing methods, including commercial kits and platforms.
  • Participate in routine team and project meetings focused on domestic and global testing activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments and ensures that reagents and equipment used in testing are appropriately calibrated and quality controlled.
  • Develop, revise and review project protocols and documents according to CEMB QMS guidelines.
  • Perform data analyses, prepares reports and delivers presentations to stakeholders.
  • Meet with SME/project leads at least bi-weekly to discuss testing results and plans.
  • Create and consult on the development of laboratory quality management documents, protocols, and risk assessments.
  • Develop CLIA-compliant Standard Operating Procedures with minimal oversight required.
  • Develop CLIA-compliant method verification and validation protocols with minimal oversight required.
  • Develop and deliver wet and dry laboratory training materials appropriate for low-resource settings.
  • Perform laboratory assessments and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Lead or contribute significantly to the design and implementation of laboratory research studies with internal and external partners.
  • Remotely assist partners with troubleshooting non-conforming events and performing root-cause analyses.
  • Conduct or support site visits to educate partnering laboratory personnel on isolate testing protocols, data reporting, and data use as it relates to meeting project goals.
  • Assist with drafting and review of outgoing guidance documents and workflows, based on information gathered through methods reviews.
  • Attend routine team and project meetings focused on testing activities.
  • Prepare summaries, reports, and slide decks to update internal and external partners on ongoing and planned activities.

Qualifications:

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to work across multiple teams and multiple projects at the same time.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and time zones.
  • Cultural sensitivity when working with partners from low- and middle-income countries.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Manage incoming specimen processing, inventory and “chain of custody” requirements as determined by Lab Coordinators.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological techniques and procedures, including aseptic technique, culturing, and identification of microorganisms.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of relevant microbiology laboratory experience.
  • Experience with regulatory requirements such as GMP, ISO 17025, and FDA guidelines.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, including microscopes, autoclaves, and PCR machines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to biohazards.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and handle small, delicate equipment.

The salary range for this position is $75,000.00 - $80,000.00 annually.
