Responsibilities:
Job Summary
The employee provides clinical patient care support in a caring, safe, and efficient manner, under the direction of an RN or LPN. They also perform other functions including phlebotomy, EKG lead placement, and respiratory functions. This position is also responsible for effectively monitoring patients on Central Station Telemetry in Medical Surgical and Step Down Units, monitoring adult and geriatric patients and occasionally adolescent patients, performing clerical duties under the direction of licensed nursing personnel, applying proper and professional communications skills between personnel within the department and to other departments, and presenting a personable and professional attitude to physicians, patients, families, visitors, and co-workers.
- Responds appropriately in lifesaving situations
- Measures and documents intake and output, heights and weights, and vital signs
- Applies, monitors, and documents restraint usage
- Collects urine, stool, sputum specimens
- Performs and documents point-of-care testing
- Performs and documents patient mobility and exercise, and comfort, rest, and sleep care needs
- Performs and documents patient hygiene, grooming, and dressing, skin and nail care, dietary, and toileting and elimination needs
- Transports patients, lab work, specimens, and blood
- Performs and documents perineal care, and applies unsterile hot/cold packs/compresses, bandages, and elastic stockings
- Performs venipuncture for specimen collection under the direction of the RN/LPN. Appropriately labels and ensures delivery to the Clinical Laboratory
- Performs routine 12-lead electrocardiography testing under the direction of the RN/LPN
- Performs respiratory care equipment application and monitoring under the direction of the RN/LPN
- Detects and identifies cardiac dysrythmias and/or life threatening arrhythmias and promptly communicates this information to the charge nurse and/or nurse assigned to that patient
- Handles desk communications properly and promptly, including responding immediately to intercom, pages and routing of message to appropriate personnel
- Organizes equipment and supplies
- Exhibits appropriate clinical competencies within unit secretary job description
- Assists with admitting, physical examination, transferring, and discharging patients
- Maintains patient records and ensures their readiness and availability for physicians
- Maintains cleaning protocol for telemetry units and is accountable for proper storage and inventory of telemetry equipment. Reports malfunctioning equipment immediately
- Maintains accurate records of telemetry strips. Ensures coverage of monitors at all times. Properly flags screen when patients are disconnected from monitors
- Completes bed making and cleaning assignments on the unit
- Adheres to Universal precaution, infection control, OSHA, and other regulatory policies and procedures. Maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures
- Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
- Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED/Equivalent
- Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Completion of course in telemetry monitoring with a score of 100%
- Experience in healthcare setting
- Student majoring in nursing or other healthcare related field of study
- Certified Nursing Assistant
