Senior Material Scientist
Overview:
Support pre/post-market engineering by solving material problems to develop and improve medical devices and manufacturing processes and advance the strategic goals of the company.
Responsibilities:

Support pre/post-market engineering by solving material problems to develop and improve medical devices and manufacturing processes and advance the strategic goals of the company.
Contribute technical/scientific expertise in the areas of material design, material change, failure mode analysis and root cause analysis, and help solve department, system-level material problems/issues.
Execute and analyze material characterization studies (DSC, TGA, FTIR, MI) to define expected performance margin relative to design targets.
Develop process and procedure for material degradation studies (UV, VHP, environmental).
Assist or provide guidance to various departments on large scale or multiple technical projects with a high degree of independence.
Respond to regulatory material questions and adhere to the Quality Management System and its processes to meet FDA 21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:
- Master of Science degree in Materials Science or Polymer Science.
- One (1) year of experience in a chemical industry with hands-on experience in a polymer chemistry laboratory setting.
- Additional experience must include:
- Hands-on experience with synthesis of polymers with solid foundation in chemical formulation.
- Polymer analysis and characterization using DSC, FTIR, TGA.
- Polymer adhesives and coatings.
- Polymer processing and mechanical/physical testing (Instron).
- Chemistry of polyolefins, polyimides, polysiloxanes and other thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
- Real time aging and theory for accelerated aging of polymers.
- Application of ASTM standards to material degradation studies.
- Application of technical knowledge to solve real-world problems in a complex regulated environment.
- Design and development of a product.
- Technical writing and that includes support by conducting and summarizing literature studies.
- Explaining technical information and concepts to a variety of audiences (technical, layperson, regulatory authority, etc).
- May work remotely with willingness and ability to travel on-site to Bloomington, Indiana for in-person team collaborations.
