Network Planning Intern, Part-Time (Spring 2025) & Full Time (Summer 2025)

What you'll do:

This is a role for a junior RF Engineer or Network Planning Engineer who is eager to learn and understand Satellite communications and contribute to the development of link budgets, coverage and capacity predictions for a global satellite network.

The ideal candidate will participate in developing a common toolset to enable predicting coverage and capacity based on a multitude of inputs. You will collaborate closely with other network planning and capacity engineers to help develop this common toolset.

The day-to-day:

As a Network Planner, you will use tools to develop and manipulate link budgets and develop complex data visualizations; use data-driven metrics to create visibility into network utilization, capacity, coverage and to mine data and solve problems.

Internship Program Details:

  • You will work part time (~15-20 hours/week) during the spring academic term- from January through May/June 2025, and this work will be done remotely
  • Starting in May or June (when your term ends), you will transition to working full time onsite at a Viasat office location for the duration of your 12-13 week internship. Viasat embraces a flexible work environment and onsite/hybrid work is determined by individual roles and teams.
  • Housing and relocation assistance are available to interns pending eligibility.
  • To ensure equity across our intern population, intern compensation is pre-determined based on a variety of factors including: role, location, and final graduation date. Intern compensation is non-negotiable.

What you'll need:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in Data Science, RF Engineering or Technology and/or related field
  • To be eligible for this position your final graduation date must fall between December 2025 and June 2026
  • Knowledge in Data Science
  • Knowledge of RF link budget and link budget tools
  • Experience with creating Data Visualizations
  • Data Wrangling Skills
  • Experience with Tableau Desktop
  • US citizenship is required for this position

Internship Dates:

  • You must be available part time from January through May/June 2025 and then full time for the duration of the 12-13 week summer internship program. Note limited exceptions may be granted. Viasat offers two options for the full time internship based on semester and quarter academic calendars:
  • Cohort 1: May 20th, 2025 – August 15th, 2025
  • Cohort 2: June 17th, 2025 – September 12th, 2025

  • Proficiency with matlab
  • Ability to work with different simulation tools
  • Proficiency with visualization tools
  • Experience with Matlab

Salary range: $20.91 - $56.97 / hourly.

For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $25.96 - $67.07/ hourly
