The Strategic Division (SD) supports high-reliability organizations including Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, and the Department of Energy (DOE), among others. Our support across our client base is expanding rapidly and encompasses important services, such as data analytics and visualization, threat analysis, risk management, modeling and simulation, cost estimating, earned value management, program management, system engineering, independent evaluation, and High Consequence Event prevention.
SPA has an immediate need for a Systems Engineering Intern to provide acquisition and operations support to Nuclear Weapon Security (NWS) capabilities for the Navy's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) office. The support would be provided from our company HQ in Alexandria, VA.The option to telework part-time is also available.
Timeline for intern selection:
- Applications can be submitted and will be reviewed until 13 December 2024.
- Interviews will be ongoing and conclude by 19 December 2024.

Responsibilities:
The SPA intern will be one of several interns providing support to SPA’s Navy customer, Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) supporting multiple systems engineering and program management functions. Intern position will start at the end of May 2025.The intern will work 40-hour weeks at SPA HQ with the SPA Systems Engineering support team. SPA considers successful interns for full-time employment. Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the intern.
Interns work under the overall cognizance of an SPA program manager while daily tasking will be from Project Leads on the Systems Engineering team. Tasks are related to the engineering management of the Navy’s Trident II missile program and include technical, administrative, organizational, and tracking functions. A technical knowledge base will help in accomplishing daily tasks. Specifically, interns will:
- Fulfill tasks to support a couple of specific systems engineering projects.
- Support meetings and product development activities for assigned projects.
- Perform technical and systems engineering research to contribute to white-papers or briefs.
- Complete an intern specific summer research project.
- Attend weekly SPA informational roundtables and working lunches with SPA leadership.
Qualifications:
- Be an upcoming senior in a Bachelor's Degree Program in Systems Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering.
- Must have experience in any of the following programming languages: Python, MATLAB, Java, C+.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to synthesize data and communicate clearly via written and verbal means.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to communicate to decision makers.
- US Citizenship required, and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
- Preference for Students enrolled in a Master's or PHD program.
- Preference for education or experience with Model Based Systems Engineering tools (e.g. SPARKS EA, Cameo Systems Modeler) and modeling languages (UML, SysML).
