Overview:

Civil Service Title: Motor Vehicle Operator, Elderly & Handicapped Persons

Reports To: Site Manager and/or Division Manager, Nutrition Services

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am-2:30pm (30 hours per week)

Works within the Nutrition Services Division and under direction, drives, cleans, services motor vehicles used to transport primarily home delivered meals and/or passengers on assigned established routes; does related work as required. Additionally, responsible for support as it relates to home bound meal participants and sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Route Operations:
Drive a vehicle along an established route while adhering to the schedule. Modify routes as needed based on program requirements and provide efficient, timely transportation services.
Safety & Vehicle Maintenance:
Operate motor vehicles in a skilled and safe manner. Conduct vehicle inspections at the start and end of each trip to ensure cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness. Perform minor servicing such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and cleaning the vehicle.
Passenger Care:
Provide safe and comfortable transportation services to elderly individuals and persons with disabilities. Demonstrate compassion, empathy, and patience when interacting with passengers, understanding their unique needs and requirements.
Record-Keeping & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of all trips, including mileage, routes, and passenger details as required by management. Prepare and submit reports regarding operational performance, incidents, or unusual circumstances.
Geographical Knowledge:

Learn and familiarize oneself with the geography of Middlesex County and surrounding areas to ensure timely and efficient routing.

Ad Hoc Responsibilities: Perform any additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the Department of Transportation based on program needs.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Appointee must possess a valid NJ Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Previous experience in transportation or vehicle operation is preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate vehicles in a safe, efficient, and competent manner.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and vehicle maintenance basics.
  • Compassionate, empathetic approach to working with elderly and disabled individuals.
  • Ability to follow routes and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Good communication skills to report incidents or unusual situations.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to learn and navigate the geography of Middlesex County and its surrounding areas.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and lift moderate amounts of weight up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles in accordance with safety standards.

Examples of Work:

  • Drives vehicle on an established route. Flexible in modifying, adding or stopping, route destinations.
  • Maybe assigned to sites/routes based on the needs of the program and can be relocated when the needs of the program dictate a change.
  • Able to efficiently operate motor vehicles in a skilled competent and safe manner.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and able to understand the needs and special requirements of the elderly and persons with disabilities in a compassionate, sympathetic and calm manner.
  • Inspects vehicle at the start and end of each trip for cleanliness and general condition for operating safety. Checks, cleans and performs minor servicing of vehicles.
  • Report any unusual circumstances immediately.
  • Maintains records of all trips and documentation required by management.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Ability to learn the geography of Middlesex County and surrounding areas.
  • All other duties as assigned.
