POSITION SUMMARY

Milton Hydro Distribution Inc. is currently seeking a Protection & Control Technician. This position is responsible for the proper operation of Milton Hydro’s SCADA/ OMS system including its related hardware, software, communication and field applications.

The incumbent will work with Engineering and Operations staff, as well as system Control Room Operators.

KEY DUTIES
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, as well as peripheral devices such as Remote Telemetry Units (RTU’s), fault indicators, and other field devices.
  • Troubleshoot SCADA/OMS system issues including but not limited to communication, system behavior etc. and liaise with software vendors as necessary.
  • Work closely with GIS team to import data into the OMS, and maintain OMS maps up-to-date.
  • Activities include the following:
  • Configure the SCADA and OMS system to add and modify field and telemetry devices/ points, and reports.
  • Enter trouble reports into OMS, quality check data, and coordinate with Operators to ensure Control Room entered reports are complete.
  • Configure RTU’s, IED’s, and Smart Fault Indicators within SCADA
  • Bench test, perform site acceptance testing and troubleshooting of recloser controllers, automated switchgear, RTU’s and Smart Fault Indicators.
  • Perform commissioning and telemetry verification for generation projects including point set-up and verification testing, on site commissioning, and work closely with customers and Hydro One.
  • Update SCADA/OMS software and IED firmware with new versions, patches, etc… as they become available.
  • Attend site meetings, perform in-field device set-up and configuration.
  • Perform in-field device inspections, troubleshooting, and repair/ replacement of RTU’s, batteries, modems, and related communication equipment.
  • Work with Engineering and Operators to execute, test and roll-out protection settings updates, debug SCADA/OMS, IED firmware, and field devices.
  • Support Operator, Operations, and Engineering needs.
  • Maintain historical SCADA/OMS data storage and provide reliability reports to Managers.
  • Open support cases with software vendors, track, and resolve case files.
  • Prepare designs, work orders, and budgets for SCADA related asset installations and maintenance. Provide input for annual capital and operating budgets related to SCADA/ OMS projects, and system upkeep.
  • Attend and participate in department and company meetings.
  • Work within company mission, vision, values and policies at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Technician or Technologist diploma from an accredited post -secondary school, with a technical major (Electrical Engineering or Computer Science) or equivalent work experience
  • Must be registered with OACETT as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or Certified Technician (C. Tech) or eligible and working towards a designation.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Experience related to Survalent SCADA, OMS system and peripheral devices and associated communication technology.
  • Trained in IHSA Electrical Safety Rules and Utility Work Protection Code.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Regulation 22/04 “Electrical Distribution Safety”.
  • Knowledge of ESRI GIS systems and SCADA integration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly MS Excel.
  • Demonstrated SEL relay programming knowledge.
  • Proficient with SpidaCalc or similar pole loading analysis.
  • Knowledge of Protection and Control theory and application in electrical distribution systems.
  • Distribution utility experience would be an asset.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record; Driver’s abstract will be required upon hire.
  • Strong project management, organization and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks/priorities.
  • Team player able to work effectively with others.
