Summary:
The Director – Commercial Credit is responsible for building and maintaining credit quality within the commercial loan portfolio consistent with organizational strategic and financial objectives. The Commercial Credit Officer achieves these results through effective leadership and management practices, collaboration with producers, credit and operations staff and by working closely with the Head of Commercial Banking and other departmental leads.The Commercial Credit Officer will define objectives, develop and implement prudent credit policies and processes, deliver management information and work with other leaders throughout the organization to build a sustainable credit culture within the credit union’s commercial activities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain and oversee the credit unions commercial lending policy and procedures in order to support the desired credit culture and credit performance over time.
- Exercises credit approval authority as an individual approver. Regularly attends Commercial Loan Committee and serves as a product knowledge expert in discussions at those committee meetings. Provides oversight for the approval process, including the quality of the loan presentations.
- Manages the credit union’s internal credit training program, working with the credit union’s training staff and external resources to deliver training that maintains and/or expands the skill level within the commercial team.
- Stays current on relevant credit union regulatory changes, monitors industry best practices and economic trends, providing updates to other members of the team and ensuring that current practices and policies are compliant and appropriate to changing conditions.
- Leads team of credit analysts and ensures that the team is positioned to succeed. Uses strong management practices to hire, coach and develop the credit team, ensuring that the team is appropriately staffed at all times.
- Monitors performance of the commercial loan portfolio, including payment performance, risk concentrations and other risk metrics appropriate to prudent management of risk at the portfolio level. Reports on trend data to Head of Commercial and Chief Lending Officer and peers and engages with the relationship managers and other resources to ensure that loans are properly risk rated, that pertinent information is shared with finance to ensure appropriate reserves are in place based on changing risk levels within the portfolio.
- Coordinated with team members on the collection and liquidation activities, working with internal and external resources to maximize recovery on troubled assets and thereby minimize losses from commercial lending activities.
- Actively coordinates across functional lending areas for Credit focused procedures and guidance on specialty lending verticals (SBA / Business Banking / Credit Scoring Models).
Requirements:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting or related field of study.
- Advanced banking and/or Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial lending, commercial credit or regulatory experience with NCUA or any banking agency.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in management
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of commercial lending and sound commercial credit principles.
- Demonstrated experience working in financial services, including the demonstrated ability to work with regulators and/or external auditors.
- Demonstrated ability to manage, coach and develop teams of credit professionals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in order to write policies, read and understand regulation, and present to small and large groups.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of treasury products, including the ability to perform risk assessment for non-credit products offered by the credit union.
- Demonstrated ability to use credit analysis tools common in the industry, including analysis software such as CreditQuest.
- Knowledge of legal requirements that impact collection activity in the credit union’s primary market areas (Kansas and Missouri.)
