Professional Counselor (Pool) – Summer School
Purpose and Scope:
During summer school, develops strategies and/or specialized Intervention or Prevention programs to improve the behavior of students who experience significant social-behavioral challenges.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides assessment testing, referrals and education services to students with disabilities or other special needs and counseling to students and their parents during summer school.
- Ensures students are in correct classes needed for promotion to next grade and/or meeting graduation requirements.
- Consults with students, families and school staff regarding student developmental needs, problems and progress during summer school
- Works to discover and develop special abilities of students, resolve students’ educational or emotional handicaps and provides peer mediation for students
- Develops strategies and provides training and support to school staff and parents for the implementation of school wide and classroom specific approaches such as preventing violence and/or alcohol and drug abuse early intervention program among students
- Collaborates with school staff needing more intensive approaches to maintain a safe school environment and crisis intervention
Minimum Qualifications:
The position requires a Master’s degree in Mental Health related area, Social Work, Education, Juvenile Justice, Special Education Psychology, School Counseling, School Psychology or equivalent State licensure or Board certification in area of specialization such as Guidance and Counseling, Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Counseling, Clinical Social Work, Licensed Professional Counselor, Behavior Analyst or related area from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health or equivalent.Also required is a Valid Tennessee Driver’s license and two years of experience in area of specialization or equivalent.
The following special conditions are required: Commitment for the entire period of summer school and attendance at the Summer School graduation. May involve missing some district training opportunities. Attendance at ALL preparatory planning sessions and periodic administrative meetings.Availability prior to the end of the regular school assignment contract to participate in summer school setup and preparation. Availability for summer school closeout operations which may occur after the new academic year contract has started.

Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
