Overview:

NV5 is seeking an enthusiastic Vessel Operator to lead vessel operations aboard our 20’ to 35’ hydrographic survey boats. The successful candidate will be highly organized with previous experience in vessel operations management and have demonstrated strong leadership skills to navigate safely.
The Vessel operator will manage all maintenance associated with the vessel, shipyard repairs, shop and facility assistance, and mobilization and demobilization of survey projects. The candidate will create a strong safety culture on the vessel and ensure that all crew members are working safely and clearly understand their duties.

The Vessel operator will report to the Marine Operations Manager. While the vessels are primarily located in Morehead City, NC, the Vessel Operator will be expected to travel for an extended time based on the requirements of the project’s scope.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for operating, assisting, and maintaining a 20’ to 35’ research vessel to support oceanographic function
  • Performs and controls deck operations
  • Operates various vessel machinery and performs maintenance
  • Ensure docking, undocking, and mooring is completed safely
  • Ensure all pre-departure checklists, crew orientation, and safety drills are conducted and documented
  • Housekeeping - Maintain an organized vessel with safe practices
  • Follow all workplace and job safety procedures
  • Complete safety certification as required
  • Communicate operation and project information as required
  • Enter maintenance work in the internal system
  • Establish Station Bill, Standing Orders, and safety culture on the vessels
  • Perform other duties as required by the project team
  • Ensure that all work is completed in accordance with Company safety policies
  • Navigate the vessel safely
  • Deploy and retrieve survey gear safely
  • Conduct JSA safety meetings to ensure that all crew members are trained and aware of their duties and responsibilities.
  • Ensure required daily logs are documented and submitted in the company system
  • Provide instructions and information to crew members, including Management system, Vessel Station Bill, Standing Orders, and all emergency response plans
  • Conduct and lead drills with all crew members
  • Must meet USCG physical requirements
  • Must be able to work 12 hours shifts and up to 21 consecutive days on a project
  • Must be able to climb steep stairs, sit or stand for long periods of time and work in all weather conditions

Qualifications:

Education / Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills include word, spreadsheets, emails, Gdrive, SharePoint, OneDrive, and navigation software
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously
  • Some marine experience on research vessels or equivalent
  • Knowledge and ability to ensure adherence to Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other federal and local laws and regulations
  • Basic working knowledge of all vessel’s systems and their proper maintenance: diesel engines, winches (hydraulic, electrical), fire suppression, communication, and navigational systems

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Valid driver's license - US Citizen
  • Hold or be capable and willing to obtain:
  • Special licenses, registration, or certification USCG license (OUPV – Near Coastal, Great Lakes, Inland Waters—minimum)
  • Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
  • STCW or equivalent – First Aid, CPR
