Overview:

The Director, Teleneurology/Associate Member will provide clinical leadership and expertise in the field of neurology for telemedicine services. This role will be responsible for overseeing the medical aspects of the telehealth network within the HMH Command Center and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients.
This role will be providing inpatient consultations and care for patients in need of stroke services; examinations, diagnoses and treatments for disorders and diseases of the nervous system; diagnostic tests as well as telephone advice in response to physicians' clinical questions, participation in strategic planning related to the Division of vascular neurology.

This role will perform duties/objectives as requested by the Chief Scientific Officer of the CDI for the conduct of basic scientific and/or translational research.

The Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases.

The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 27 labs, 180 scientists and support personnel. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, and pharmacology.

Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a Director, Teleneurology/Associate Member at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Clinical Oversight: Providing medical direction and guidance to the telemedicine network's neurologists and healthcare providers. This involves reviewing and approving clinical protocols, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices, and promoting the highest standards of patient care.
  • Quality Assurance: Implementing and monitoring quality assurance processes to maintain the highest level of clinical quality within the teleneurology network. This includes conducting case reviews, monitoring patient outcomes, and addressing any concerns or issues related to clinical excellence.
  • Teleconsultation Support: Participates in Network teleneurology call pool to support patient care across the HMH Neuroscience Institute teleneurology program. Required to take at least 2 shifts a month as part of job role. Shifts will be paid at the network rate for any shifts taken in excess two shifts. Provider will perform teleneurology consultation for acute and non-acute inpatient consultations and care for patients in need of neurological services. This involves providing clinical guidance on complex cases, reviewing diagnostic test results, and assisting in treatment planning and care recommendations
  • Clinical Guidelines and Protocols: Developing and updating clinical guidelines, protocols, and best practices specific to teleneurology. This includes staying informed about the latest advancements in neurology and telehealth and incorporating them into the network's clinical practices.
  • Collaboration and Education: Collaborating with other medical directors, healthcare organizations, and academic institutions to foster research, education, and professional development opportunities in teleneurology. This may involve participating in conferences, publishing research papers, and delivering educational presentations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with telehealth laws, regulations, and industry standards. This includes maintaining patient privacy and data security, adhering to telemedicine licensing requirements, and staying informed about changes in regulatory landscape.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identifying areas for improvement in the teleneurology network and driving initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. This may involve implementing new technologies, optimizing workflows, and collaborating with stakeholders to address challenges and achieve strategic goals.
  • Administrative management of clinical care team: Develops call schedules to support both the acute teleneurology and general non acute teleneurology services based on estimated census of combined partner sites. Ensures training and education to new team members and provides guidance on care protocols and documentation. Ensures providers are network credentialed to provide care at HMH and non HMH hospitals where the program providers care.
  • Partnership Development: Identifies hospital partners to expand HMH Teleneurology and works with administration to secure contracts for HMH service coverage and consultative support. Serves as the HMH medical liaison between partner sites. Essential Clinical Job Functions: 20%
  • Provides medical care for inpatients with stroke and other CNS disorders.
  • Provides medical care in the context of the stroke service.
  • Consults with patients to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
  • Recommends and orders tests to determine extent of illness or help diagnose condition.
  • Participates in the 24-hour on-call coverage for the Division.
  • Assists the Director of the Division of Vascular Neurology in supervising professional & administrative activities within the Division related to the quality of patient care rendered by Division members.
  • Assists with maintenance of medical records in the Division as to quality, completeness and promptness of completion, assuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Meets with the Division Director & the Department Chair on a scheduled and as needed basis.
  • Participates in the development of state-of-the-art medical education events/teaching rounds of interest to neurologists, mid-level providers, and other medical practitioners including psychologists, rehab therapists, residents, nurses and students, as applicable.
  • Works harmoniously with other physicians, nursing and rehab staff and administration.
  • Attends departmental faculty & division meetings, as well as other meetings, as appropriate.
  • Based on faculty rank and years of experience, provides mentorship to junior staff as applicable. Research Job Functions: 70%
  • The CDI expects the Mgr, Associate Member to cover at least 50% of their salary as direct costs on research grants. The Mgr, Associate Member is expected to use reasonable professional effort to acquire grant funding and philanthropic support to cover as much as possible of the operating expenses and salaries of support personnel for their research laboratory at the HMH CDI.
  • Maximum allotted time for professional activities away from the Hackensack University Medical Center of 30 days.
  • Professional activities include; scientific consulting, editorial work, seminar participation, scientific training, service on NIH study sections and review panels and attendance at national and international science meetings.
  • Oversees the operation of the lab processes and lab staff.
  • Establishes, maintains, and administers the financial longevity of the lab.
  • Develops and works within the budget of the lab.
  • Establishes and develops strategic goals of the lab.
  • Recommends, creates, and develops policies, practices, and procedures of the lab.
  • Responsible for recommending personnel decisions such as hiring, terminating, and disciplinary actions.
  • Responsible for guiding, mentoring, and evaluating the performance of the appropriate lab staff.
  • Minimum on site work of 40 hours each week.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • M.D./D.O. of Ph.D degree from a recognized medical school or graduate level institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years post-residency experience in the care of neurological patients with at least three years in managing patients through teleneurology services.
  • Qualifications as an Attending physician on the Medical Center Staff at a HMH hospital.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with professional peers and supervised members of the Department.
  • Eligible for faculty appointment at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine
  • Demonstrated involvement in program development, performance improvement, and research activities.
  • Minimum 3 years in a funded research program at the Assistant Member, Assistant Professor or equivalent rank.
  • Extensive experience/independent NIH and/or foundation funding.
  • Professional peer-review experience as an ad hoc manuscript or grant reviewer or on either Editorial Boards of Journals or Grant Review Committees.
  • Minimum publication of 15 articles in scientific journals or book chapters while in rank as an Assistant Scientist, Assistant Professor or equivalent rank. The candidate must be first or last author on a majority of these publications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Board Certified/Eligible in Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
