[ref. i2662221] Supervisor, Occupational Therapy
Responsibilities:
Under overall direction of the PM&R Manager, the Occupational Therapy Supervisor oversees OT, and administrative staff, provides Occupational Therapy services to inpatients and/or outpatients referred for such services. Occupational Therapy Supervisor demonstrates competency in skills necessary to care for and manage primarily adolescent, adult and geriatric age patients in an acute care, acute inpatient rehabilitation and/or outpatient setting.
Essential Functions of the Occupational Therapy Supervisor:
- Orients/Trains new staff personnel and/or clinical teaching/supervision of Occupational Therapy Assistant or Occupational Therapist students to develop personal leadership skills, remain abreast and knowledgeable of clinical skills and to promote education within the PM&R Department.
- Implements accepted standards of documentation to systematically record the results, in a timely manner, of evaluations, the response to adolescent, adult and geriatric patient treatments, patient/ family teaching sessions, and patient progress according to known/required documentation standards within each of the therapy settings.
- Maintains communication with the patient’s referring physician for clarification and accurate interpretation of Occupational
- Therapy orders; communicates with the physician periodically to inform him/her of the patient’s progress and appropriateness for continued Occupational Therapy Services as appropriate.
- Exhibits desirable interpersonal skills by verbalizing appropriately with patients, families, and fellow health care workers in a respectful, understanding, professional manner to effect optimal communications among all persons.
- Demonstrates competence in use of the work station computer for routine activities to include documentation of patient evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Assists in scheduling inpatients, outpatients, or inpatient Rehab Unit patients according to established procedures to affect a timely, organized provision of Occupational Therapy Services. Oversees daily schedule/ operations to ensure workflow is optimized. Responsible for staffing.
- Helps supervise the work of Occupational Therapy Assistants to effectively carry out the treatment plan; communicate with these and all health care members in a cooperative, faciliatory manner to promote quality care and optimal goal achievement.
- Completes all necessary insurance requirements for proper reimbursement of services.
- Addresses potential discharge needs and services of the patient early in the care planning process. For inpatients and inpatient Rehab Unit patients, assists the patient, family, or significant other in preparation for discharge to include ordering or fabrication of splints, necessary adaptive or assistive equipment, and provision of a home exercise program if appropriate; coordinates recommendations with Case Management to include ordering of equipment, Home Care Occupational Therapy or arranges for continued Occupational Therapy services as an outpatient if needed to further attain rehab goals, and provide continuity of patient care.
- Retains the ability to work efficiently and provide quality care to an average of 8-12 patients per day with division of inpatients and outpatients among Occupational Therapy Staff to provide continuity in the flow of patients. Inpatient Rehab Unit staff: 5-6 patients/day.
- Coordinates the Plan of Care with PM&R Department or inpatient Rehab Unit Staff and other appropriate members of the health care team in an interdisciplinary, collaborative manner to ensure implementation and follow through of the treatment plan in a timely, effective, and organized manner.
- Administers all Occupational Therapy treatment procedures competently (see Competency Skill List) specific to the treatment setting according to recognized standards of appropriate care and observing all indications and contraindications of treatment.
- Demonstrates Occupational Therapy competency by attaining desired treatment outcome/goals and successful completion of competency assessment process.
- Identifies educational needs of the primarily adult and geriatric patient through appropriate assessment criteria and establishes/implements a teaching plan, that is interdisciplinary when appropriate, for the patient’s family and/or significant others with subsequent re-assessment of the teaching process.
- Evaluates all new patients referred to for Occupational Therapy using data from the medical record and physical assessment, including pain assessment, to identify the primarily adolescent, adult and geriatric patient’s needs or deficits, especially functional, for which Occupational Therapy is appropriate.
- Interprets the evaluation data and, using good judgment to identify and prioritize patient needs, establishes a comprehensive documented Plan of Care which includes mutually acceptable treatment goals with patient, family, or significant others.
- Plans and/or implements current or new programs/presentations for the department, hospital, or community.
Works collaboratively with other hospital departments and personnel to develop, implement, and support quality care and improvement initiatives and opportunities.
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy required. (This requirement is waived for individuals who were licensed prior to the requirement of a Master's Degree for licensure).
Over 3 years to 5 years of experience in OT required
Licenses and Certifications: Occupational Therapist – Licensed, upon hire, required
Basic Life Support (BLS), Within 2 weeks of hire, preferred
