This position is ONLY open to applicants who are currently attending any Utah POST Academy.
Hiring processes will be initiated based upon application and/or interview scoring.
Applicants will be required to participate in an interview and a physical fitness test. Interview and testing
dates will be arranged after the applications have been reviewed for eligibility. This process will require the
applicant's presence in St. George on the date of testing.
Please Note: Applicants who are hired under this job offering will be hired as Part Time employees and
will be paid for the hours spent attending the Police Academy. They will be provided full-time employment
as a Police Officer I, with the St. George Police Department, upon their successful completion of POST.
Applicants will be required to sign a two-year employment contract prior to being hired under this job
offering.
Salary & Benefits
Starting salary will be paid at the entry level wage for Police Officer I. Ranges as of
December 2024:
Police Officer Trainee: 58 (61,854)
Individuals hired for this specific job posting will be paid as Police Officer Trainees for the duration of their POST
Academy training. Police Officer Trainees will be promoted to Police Officer after successfully obtaining their
POST Certification and future wages will be determined in accordance with St. George City policies and
procedures for full time employees. The pay ranges and ranks for full time police officers are:
Police Officer I - Starting Salary: 58 ($61,854 - $92,780/year)
Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $92,780/year, which isthe maximum
salary for this position as of December 2024.
Police Officer II- Starting Salary: 60 ($64,985 - $97,477/year)Individuals hired in this position have the
opportunity to progress up to $97,477/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December
2024.
Police Officer III-Starting Salary: 63 ($69,982 - $104,972)
Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $104,972/year, which is the maximum
salary for this position as of December 2024.
Position Summary
Trainees will be paid an hourly part time wage while attending a Utah Post Academy Police Officer Standards
and Training program which includes attending classroom lectures, completing written testing and practical
assessments, physical fitness testing, and scenario based training for the purpose of obtaining their Utah Police
Officer Certification.
Upon completion of POST, and when promoted to Full Time Police Officer I status, performs a variety of
highly trained law enforcement procedures for the City of St. George to protect and maintain the wellbeing of
the general population of the City.
Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following

Trainee:
- Attend all classes and training sessions, and complete all written, practical, and skills assessments to
successfully obtain POST Certification.
Police Officer I:
- Effects an arrest within training guidelines and department policy and using that amount of force which
- Preparesinvestigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols,
- Exercisesindependent judgment in determining when there isreasonable suspicion to detain,
ists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what
degree.- Operates a law enforcement vehicle during the day and night in emergency situations involving speeds in
smoke, high winds, rain, ice, and snow.
- Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating
- Gathersinformation in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of
- Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and
exiting a law enforcement patrol vehicle; lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over
and pulling oneself up over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through
openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on
uneven or narrow surfaces; and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.- Loads, unloads, aims, and fires, from a variety of body positions, a handgun, rifle, and other
agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of
proficiency prescribed in certification standards.- Performssearches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling
and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious
vehicles and persons.
I0. Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.- Engagesin law enforcement patrol functions, including such things as working rotating shifts, walking
- Effectively communicates with people, including juveniles, by giving information and

- Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions
- Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions ofsuspects and other
- Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic for long
periods of time; administering emergency medical aid; lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from
dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.- Processes and transports prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate
- Puts on and operates a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.
- Extinguishessmall fires by using extinguisher and other appropriate means.
- Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such
- Serves as an agent of the court in serving warrants, subpoenas, summonses, etc.
- Processes arrested suspects, including taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of inked
