New Destiny is the largest provider of supportive housing for domestic violence survivors in New York and is a leading advocate in the effort to obtain the resources needed to end family homelessness in New York City.

Job Purpose

New Destiny has experienced unprecedented growth over the last few years, tripling its budget, number of staff, and number of permanent homes available to survivors of domestic violence, and is continuing to charge forward with a strategic plan focused on expanding affordable housing resources for the thousands of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness and abuse each year.

As such, the organization has created a new executive position, Chief Financial Officer & VP of Administration to play a pivotal leadership role in providing the human and financial stability needed to support this growth. The CFO/VP will report to the CEO and oversee the organization's finance, human resources, and IT and other administrative functions.

As a key thought partner to the CEO, the CFO/VP will provide a strategic financial vision for the organization and ensure that the fiscal and administrative infrastructure and processes are in place to drive New Destiny’s mission of providing housing for vulnerable New Yorkers while providing the needed support to staff across the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in non-profit finance leadership roles and a proven track record as an exemplary manager and team builder, dedicated to effectively structuring and leading teams, developing talent, and building strong relationships within and across teams. The CFO/VP will continuously and adeptly optimize systems and processes, helping teams work more efficiently, and provide the fiscal planning and oversight needed for a rapidly growing organization. Specifically, the role will include:

Executive Leadership:
The CFO/VP will serve as an essential thought partner to the CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors in developing and implementing the organization’s strategic priorities. This includes:
  • Providing guidance and planning as new initiatives are developed and implemented by the fiscal, HR andadministrative staff.
  • Developing and improving standard operating procedures, reports, and metrics to promote quality controland continual improvement.
  • Championing a positive, collaborative organizational culture.
Financial Management:
The CFO/VP is a key strategic advisor to the CEO and Board, with the primary responsibility of guiding the organization’s financial strategy and planning to ensure financial health and sustainability. Specifically, the CFO/VP will be responsible for:
  • Developing the annual operating budget for the organization and overseeing timely financial reporting for the CEO, board, and funders.•Assessing financial performance against the annual budget and long-term objectives and providing actionable, strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.•Working with their finance team to manage the annual budget, aligning with strategic goals and monitoring performance.•Optimizing allocation of government and foundation funding to maximize impact, working with the CEO, development team, and program staff to create and manage program budgets.•Monitoring cash flow to ensure sufficient cash on hand, identifying opportunities and challenges and making recommendations for process improvements, investments, etc.•Work with the Senior Director of Finance and Comptroller to oversee the annual audits and tax filings with an external firm; develop and refine as needed financial policies and internal controls; and ensuring compliance.•Manage banking operations and relationships.•Provides strategic financial management, including financial planning, analysis, and reporting, making recommendations as needed on resource allocation.•Manage financial reporting to the Board’s finance/audit committee and provide additional support to the committee and full Board of Directors as needed.•Provide leadership to the finance department ensuring strong management of New Destiny’s accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial grants management, annual audit process coordination, 990 filing and other tax-related regulatory functions.•Identify potential financial risks and implement controls to mitigate these risks while optimizing opportunities for growth.•Ensure a strong system of oversight and administration for all funding sources, including government contracts, grants, and foundation funding, through accurate and detailed record keeping and grant reporting.
Human Resources and Administration:
  • Supervise HR staff, overseeing all HR functions including, talent acquisition; onboarding, orientation, and offboarding; updating of the employee handbook; performance reviews; and managing HR-related issues.
  • Oversee payroll administration, timesheet reviews, and employee inquiries.
  • Ensure HR policies comply with current laws and regulations.
  • Work with HR staff to manage contracts and relationships with New Destiny’s PEO and other vendors thatprovide benefits to New Destiny staff.
  • Manage New Destiny’s insurance coverage, healthcare, retirement and other benefits, makingrecommendations as needed to the CEO for improvements/changes.
  • Supervise the office manager, ensuring that core infrastructure and processes, such as phone systems,office space management, desk and room reservations, and both the office and site-based purchasing arefunctioning smoothly and efficiently.
  • Set and uphold operational excellence standards, ensuring alignment and performance acrossdepartments, developing, and implementing Standard Operating Procedures as needed.
  • Oversee internal and external IT, including managing the IT staff, ensuring responsiveness, and support the organization's technology needs, both hardware and software.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have/be:
  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field. Master’s degree a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in senior finance positions, preferably in a nonprofit, managing staff andoverseeing admin and/or HR functions.
  • Strong knowledge of HR procedures.
  • An inspirational leader with experience managing diverse teams and achieving ambitious goals.
  • An excellent problem-solving, analytical, organizational skills, and attention to detail, with openness tofeedback.
  • Discreet, with excellent judgment and strong communication skills.
  • Highly proficient in Excel with extensive experience using accounting-based software.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice.
  • Exceptional strategic financial acumen, with the ability to interpret and apply understanding of key financialindicators to support high-quality decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and financials modeling and forecasting skills and in-depth knowledge of GenerallyAccepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls.
  • Extensive experience managing government contracts and grants from the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development (HUD) and/or New York City and New York State agencies.
  • Strong understanding of New York State and New York City housing programs, particularly supportivehousing programs and housing development.
  • A keen perception of the racial, gender, and socioeconomic dynamics of underserved communities.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the intellectual depth and maturity to workwith executive leaders, staff, and vendors.
  • Proven track record of strong change management, with demonstrable experience in methodically trackingprogress and plans to achieve short- and long-term goals.
  • Deep experience leading and managing diverse teams, serving as a coach and mentor to managementstaff in a range of functional areas, particularly around giving constructive feedback, developing supervisoryskills, assessing, and supporting professional growth.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to transition seamlessly from strategic innovation to tactical execution.

Compensation/Benefits

Salary is $165,000-$185,000 per year depending on qualifications. This is a hybrid role allowing for regular Work-From-Home days. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, vision, short disability, PTO, paid holidays, 401(k) and other benefits.
