Responsibilities:

The Nursing Director is a Registered Professional Nurse who has 24 hour responsibility and accountability for a specified unit(s). She/he is responsible for the quality of nursing practice and patient care.

Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of Nursing Department Philosophy and Objectives, and policies, procedures and protocols. Participates in the development of standards of care and standards of professional practice for the department and unit.

Provides clinical direction to staff and evaluates the level of care provided by nursing staff.

Demonstrates expertise in the utilization of the nursing process and directs staff in its application. Hire, fire, discipline and perform performance appraisals for all nursing staff. Plans and participates in the clinical and leadership development of staff on the unit(s) and evaluates effectiveness of programs and activities.
Assures compliance with hospital and department policies and utilizes them as a basis for decision making for both clinical and management issues. Plans and implements unit based quality, performance improvement activities and shares results at the department level.

Participates in planning the budget and table of organization for her/his unit(s) and monitors decision making unit(s) budget.

Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in decision making. Plans staffing schedule of unit(s) for optimal utilization of staff to meet patient care requirements on a 24 hour basis and in accordance with assignment mechanisms defined by the department.

Develops and maintains effective communication mechanism on the unit(s) with staff, physicians, patients and families and between the unit and other departments to facilitate the delivery of care and enhance patient satisfaction.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Nursing required. Master of Nursing preferred.
  • Registered Professional Nurse currently licensed in New York State.
  • Minimum 3 years staff nurse experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of nursing leadership experience.
